Highlights of 2013!

When a new year beckons, it is time to give thanks for the year that has passed.

The problem is, this year I haven't been really active in blogging the events in my life, so I have no record of what happened! Gonna have to go with memory and Facebook searching.

1) Took Animal Behavior
I have almost no memory of any significant event that arose from school, apart from taking this really fun mod called Animal Behavior. My review of it can be found here, but it was just a really enjoyable module with a great lecturer, content, and got to hang out with the lovable Lois from church :)

Our project was on cats... you can ask me personally about what we did.

2) Celebrated CNY with Szehong and friends.
One thing I enjoy doing is to hang out with my gf friends, or for her to hang out with mine. For CNY we had a gathering with her secondary school clique, and had a great time!

Dinner at Esplanade... we had deep fried panda with braised panda on the side. (ok no we didn't. I'm sorry. I love pandas. And they are an endangered species. So love your pandas).

3) Shot a ridiculously good photoshoot using an amateur camera with Szehong
It was just a casual, fun idea, that we would go to Vivocity and take some mock wedding shots just for fun, with my average noob Samsung camera. So we basically set the camera on timer, quickly got into position, and posed. We never expected to take some pretty darn amazing shots:

4) Got the best internship in my life.
Haha ok this is partly because it was the ONLY internship in my life. And it wasn't just a good internship because of what I learnt on the job, or because of the opportunities it opened to me. Additionally, it was because it allowed me to meet a bunch of great, awesome and fun people.

We were lucky how most of us could hit it off really well and had great hours of crazed laughter and stomach-aching moments in that little room we spent together every weekday for 10 weeks.

I also got the youngest, most friendly supervisor among everyone in Yining, who was more than just a supervisor but also a friend to me.The tradeoff was that she had the least experience as well... but judging from how much time the other sups had for their interns, I think I got the best deal :P (she still owes me my testimonial though grr been chasing her for months)

5) Met my sbff, Eri Sasaki
This could be combined into the previous point, but I thought it deserved one in itself. I became close friends with one of my fellow interns. Through random conversations about our US SEPs, personal lives, and own relationships, this friendship blossomed way beyond my initial expectations. I call her my 'sbff' now, which stands for 'second bff' (first one is my bestie chris haha.)

Our first (and ONLY??) picture together, way before we became close friends. How come we don't have any pictures together!
I'm really grateful for meeting and getting to know Eri, as she's just such a pleasant, positive person to be around. Being the cynical, pessimistic person I am, my interactions with her remind me constantly that it's ok to be idealistic and just... dream and be happy sometimes.  Plus the gf seems to like her, so that's great. Hope we can be long term family friends and our kids can be playmates or something ^^

6) Wrote, directed, and filmed several video projects for some psychology modules
This was another series of events that came out of the blue. We had to come out with something creative for our presentations, and after some short brainstorming we decided to film a Modern Family video for my Positive Psychology module.

I volunteered to write the script, and we proceeded to have a great time filming it.

Our presentation was about Optimism, so I created two characters to contrast the optimistic vs pessimistic style, and wrote what I hoped to be a funny script for it. It turned out pretty well, and was rather well received by the class (judging from the laughter :D )
And the more important thing is that we had SUCH a hilarious great time filming it (watch till the end for bloopers). Laugh until damn tired.

Following this success, I got bold and volunteered to write the script for the presentation for another module, Addictive Behaviors. It turned out pretty damn well too. Our topic was exercise addiction, and our goal was to present what we wrote in our research paper to the class in an interesting, engaging manner. This was our final product:

Part 1 (Watch this)

Part 2 (You can skip this if you want, abit technical)

Part 3 - The Music Video (WATCH THIS)

I don't know which project I'm more proud of - the Mist Family was a longer, more funny script; but I am the lead character in Axel Size! hahaha. Oh well, I love both of them. And kudos to a supportive group (in both instances) who had faith in me and was willing to be directed by me haha.

Positive Psychology group, after our second presentation. Top picture we were in character (of our skit).

Addictive Behaviors group, after the semester.

I think what made the whole experience for these two videos better was that at some point, my entire group decided to just have fun and not care about grades too much. Not everyone would be willing to do that, but I'm glad I was surrounded by like-minded people. When you release the inhibition of trying to 'fulfil criteria' to get a better grade, you just have more creativity and more room to make a good video.
Plus, I really enjoyed seeing the whole process come to fruition, and discovered that I have a mini passion for making videos like these.

Oh, we did really well for both videos nonetheless (about an A/A+ grade for both).

7) Got a surprise 24th birthday celebration
This came at the end of a grueling day of filming for the Mist Family video, so its pleasantness was amplified ten times. Like omg ! The good things never end!

Must really thank sbff for planning this and going to buy the cake and all. So lucky to have her as a friend!

The Mist Family... minus Raymond. We went to eat dimsum after the long day of filming.
Also, I somehow got two more birthday celebrations after this (albeit a combined one with October babies), once with SNL and the other with PALs. I think it's the most number of 'surprise' birthday celebrations in a year I've ever had in my life.

8) Discovered Escape rooms!
This year, several companies sprung up in Singapore running escape room games! The basic premise is that you are locked in a room, and you have to solve a series of puzzles to unlock a series of locks to get out of the room.

I formed a little team with the PPSD interns, and we've been to several escape rooms now: Wonderfool Dream (our first, failed cos the first puzzle took too long) and Dimension Z (solved) at The Escape Artist, Chamber of Secrets at Xcape (solved. Really great puzzles here) (I also went to Catch me if you can @ Xcape with another group), and Painter's Murder at Freeing SG (solved. Didn't enjoy it much, was too easy)

I really enjoy solving the puzzles and marveling at the genius of the puzzles. Hope we can continue solving rooms!

9) Started playing Hearthstone
My gaming 'addictions' change from season to season, and my recent obsession is Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, a CCG made by Blizzard.

I've joined two events so far, one being a promotional event which I got lucky and won $120, and another being a constructed tournament which I finished in 4th place, something quite admirable considering others have spent over $50 on the game while I've spent $0 to buy any cards.

My loot from Bugis+  promotional event.
I'm pretty much engrossed with strategizing and writing guides for this game at the moment, and really enjoying this. Wonder how long this will last heh.

The community is starting to grow too (the game is still in closed beta!), so hopefully this game becomes bigger than it currently is, and I can say I was one of the pioneers in Singapore LOL.

10) Went to Tokyo, Japan.
I'm not sure whether it's memory bias, but somehow the exciting and great events seem to all happen during the second half of this year. What happened in the first half of the year??

Anyway, this great year culminated with an overseas vacation to Tokyo with the gf and friends!

Szehong and I wearing yukatas at an indoor onsen place at Odaiba

We went to Odaiba, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara, Harajuku, Disneyland+Sea, and Ueno. It was a great sampling of Japanese culture, something that I've only heard being squealed and proclaimed from the gf all this while (haha) before going for this trip.

Disneysea was so damn beautiful I can cry

I really like the 'expected' service standard of being extremely chirpy and polite from all the service staff in Japan! (even the 7-11 people) The technology of toilets was pretty cool too (why doesn't Singapore implement buttwashers?! best invention ever).

And the food! The food!!

Ok, for more food pictures, go to this link, I blogged about it previously.

It was such a nice break from reality - I recall on the last day of Japan my brain had already began planning for what I had to do back in Singapore. Vacations are nice.

And you know what they say about couples who survive a vacation together.... ;)

---

And that's a wrap! I ended this year as I did every year for the past 3 years, watching the fireworks with the girlfriend :) It's just a nice exclamation point to the end of the year.

May 2014 be an even more fun-filled, blessed year! Happy new year everyone!

Tokyo - A Food Journey

I recently went to Tokyo for 7 days with the gf and some friends, but I'm abit lazy to chronologically blog all the events that happened, the photos are on my Facebook (and hers), for my blog I'll just talk about the food :)

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="461"] My first meal in Japan. We arrived pretty late at our hotel, and we were really hungry so we just went downstairs to a nearby 7-11 and bought something. This wasn't cheap - 500 yen is like 6$. It was really salty, didn't really enjoy it.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="576"] I don't know what possessed me to buy cup (or bowl) noodles for breakfast, but I did. It was way too much to finish, and way too salty. bleah.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="576"] My sushi set and first proper meal in Japan. It was at the Onsen place in Odaiba. Was decent, though priced at around 1000 yen with no side dishes or anything.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] A ramen place near our hotel. I didn't really enjoy this because the restaurant was filled with smokers. Yes, smoking is allowed in restaurants in Japan. This was about 800 yen I think. Shrimp dumplings with charsiew and ramen[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Our meal at Disneyland for 600 yen. Was the most filling and cheapest thing available. Quite pathetic. Taste was ok. I enjoyed the meals at Anaheim's Disneyland better.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Pretty good Tonkatsu Curry rice from Coco Curry House. 900 yen[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Another sad meal at Disneyland. Well, this was Disneysea. Naan with chicken curry lol. The naan was abit too thick, the curry was good though. 700 yen I think. Can't really remember.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Next series of photos were from this random sushi place we chanced upon - we were walking around in Shibuya and just decided to enter this shop as Sushi was 105yen apiece. Turned out to be a pretty cool place, with automated ordering (You enter your order in the computer screen in front of you, then after a few minutes it zips out on a conveyor belt and stops in front of you)[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Tempura with sesame seed. Really good.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Prawn with mayo[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Spicy Salmon[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] One of the best chawanmushi I've had (200 yen). It had shredded prawn, shrimps, oyster. So much liao![/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Takopachi octopus balls[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="576"] A random ramen place in Ameyoko Street in Harajuku. Tempura was super deep fried bleah too much batter. Udon was alright. Total cost about 800-900 yen.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="576"] a really filling meal in Kabukicho, Shinjuku. Think was about 900-1000 yen. Ramen with gyoza and rice balls. Couldn't finish my noodles, was way too much. I liked this place as it was a really small restaurant with counter seats and you can look into the kitchen and see them cook. Oh, like many other places, you place your order via a vending machine outside, and you enter with a small chit of paper.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Ichiran Ramen from Ueno Station (near the toilet in the shopping mall). Easily the best ramen I had the whole trip!
The broth is not too salty but very tasty, and the chilli is just the right amount of spiciness. I indicated normal portions of everything except the one above normal for flavor, maybe thats' why the flavor was so strong and good.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Waffles from a maid 'cafe' in Akihabara. It was more of a pub/bar than a cafe, and the maids were not pretty or cute. Boo. But there was no entry fee (the first cafe we went to had a 1000 yen entry fee) The waffles sucked. Soft and chewy and very eggy.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Lemon lime Shoju (ordered by mistake, I didn't know it was an alcoholic drink), mushrooms, some eel, from a robatayaki place in Shimbashi called Musashi.
It was quite pricey, our bill came up to 3400 yen for 2 people, even though we only got 4 dishes. Think they anyhow charge us sia.
AND. Both of us got food poisoning from this! Spent an hour in the toilet -_-[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Pity this photo was blurred, it was my favourite dish at the robatayaki place. beans rolled with salmon. Really juicy and yummy thing.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Crepe from Harajuku on the last day to satisfy the gf's craving. Was so cold and we were eating ice cream ><[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="576"] Sushi set for about 1000 yen in Hamamatsucho. Comes with chawanmushi and miso soup! Good stuff.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="576"] Special Tonkatsu rice from Narita Airport, for about 1600 yen. Was really good though. I think the special just meant an additional egg and abit more sauce and pork cutlet. They also had free flow salad (that green shredded thing you see in the front). Very very filling. Good stuff![/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="432"] Buffet breakfast at Kikusui Hotel! It was our final night hotel near Narita, as our flight was in the morning. Good food! Had 2-3 helpings.[/caption]

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="576"] Our meal on the flight back. Yummeh~[/caption]

And that's a wrap! Food in Japan is quite pricey, at about 7-15$ SGD, though if you want to stick to cheap options you can always get the 400-600 yen ramen (about $6-8 SGD) though you will get sick of it I think. Their ramen typically has very little meat. It was a good trip, got to explore a new part of the world and learn some basic Japanese words (KUDASAI kudasai kudasai. Japanese say this alot.  And To O na shi ma ni mas (doors are closing. Our lift had a cute female voice who said this in a very catchy way and it became my favourite phrase. I'm pretty sure I spelt it wrongly)

Ok ! I'm done with this entry. arigato gozaimasu for reading. bye!

Homemade burgers!

I've been wanting to make burgers for a long time and finally got about to doing it!

Alan's Burger and Fries

Ingredients: (makes 4 patties)

200g minced pork
200g minced beef
1 cup bread crumbs
1 small onion
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 egg + 2 tablespoons water
1 slice of cheese
optional:
4 slices of cheese
BBQ/tomato/chilli sauce
1 apple, sliced
4 hamburger buns

Preparation

1) Dice up the onion into small bits. You can vary the amount of onion you want but do have some as it adds to the taste very well.

2) Put all the ingredients except the cheese into a bowl, and mix well with your hands.
You can add more mustard/salt/pepper to your liking. I'm going to try to mix in BBQ sauce at this stage the next time, as well as some thyme.

3) Divide into 4 flat patties. Try to make them flat, about 1.5inch thick should be the most, otherwise it won't cook well. (Mine were 1 inch) Enclose 1/4 slice of cheese in each patty (optional)

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="614"] Raw patties[/caption]

4) Put in fridge for 20-30 minutes. This is to help the patties firm up so it won't fall apart when you cook them.

5) Heat up frying pan with just a bit of oil, then put in patties when the oil sizzles (just sprinkle a drop of water or something to tell)

6) Depending on your heat, leave on each side for 2-4 minutes. I tried 3 minutes for the first batch on medium-high flame and it turned out slightly burnt:

For the next batch I used a medium flame, and only about 2 minutes on each side. Turned out perfect:

If you enclosed the small piece of cheese inside, you can get something like:

7) After removing the patty from the pan, it may be good to put on top of a kitchen roll to let the oil drain out a bit.

8) Serve with buns and side dish of your choice.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="614"] Those are apple slices, sliced to look like chips. Healthier choice! When serving, you can add some BBQ/chilli sauce to the bun, and a slice of cheese too if you like. I added cheese and a slice of apple in the bun for fun. Tasted really good.[/caption]

That's it!

Simple to make, really tasty, and healthy (use less oil)!

Stretching myself thin

I've always had a lot of free time. Since secondary school, I was never very much involved in any CCA or any outside activity, which meant a lot of time at home. All these years, I've been using that time to play computer games, or watch TV shows online, etc. I'm not used to being out often or till late. I don't like to.

This coming semester though, seems like it's going to be the toughest 3 months of my life, in terms of activity overload.

The following is not a rank order, but just in random order of whatever comes to mind.

1) IRO PAL

I am working part time at the NUS International Relations Office, as a Peer Advising Leader. The commitment level is roughly 8-10 hours a week, so that's quite a bit of time gone. I'm hoping the events stop coming and I don't have to go in much.

2) Honors Thesis

Part of my thesis project involves data collection. Data collection means hours spent in the lab, both running the study as well as data entry as well as analyzing the data. I don't look forward to this, especially if I get a null result which will suck.

Apart from data collection, there's still the thousands of articles I have to dive through to try to form some coherent story in my thesis which I guess I can only write in semester 2 or late semester 1, since I won't know how to proceed without my results.

3) IFG - Tchoukball

I'm playing Tchoukball for my faculty (go Arts!) at the Inter-Faculty Games, so there's gonna be trainings about twice a week until the end of August when the IFG occurs. Time time time.

4) NUS - Tchoukball ?

I'm planning to try out for the NUS Tchoukball team, and if I get in, that means practice twice a week. That is not including time spent for competitions or IVP training (if I get in). The best thing that can happen is for me to fail at trials and not get selected, would take a burden off my chest. But if I can, I definitely will go la haha. Best thing as in best for my problematic workload.

5) RT

Because I failed my IPPT by 16s (yes fml. stupid 2.4km run), I have to go for 20 sessions of Remedial Training by Nov 5th. Hooray that's 20 evenings gone. (RT is about 6-8PM, total time about 4 hours including travelling time)

6) Gym

I still plan to go to the gym 3 times a week, Mon, Wed, Fri. If it gets too tough with both IFG and NUS trainings then I'll reduce it to 1-2 times a week for August, and resume the full schedule once IFG is over.

7) Two heavy lv4000 modules

Somehow, this semester, the two Psych honors-level modules I picked are both very intensive. Both have 3-5 readings each week, and one of them has a very intensive CA (project, presentation, regular essays, thought questions). GL HF. Need to hold on to my second upper honors

8) Church

Recently, my gf has been attending church regularly and I'm very very glad about that. Last sem/year I've been kinda slacking on my church attendance, often sacrificing Saturday or sometimes even Sundays to take a 'study break' (as in, break from church to study instead). I can't and I shouldn't do that anymore, as I want to attend church with her. So that's Sat evenings +Sun mornings.

9) Relationships

I'll still want to spend time with my gf of course, having gone through a harsh lesson about how important spending quality time with each other regularly is. I also have other friends that I want to meet up with, have a meal here and there, etc. Where do I dig up the time? How do sports people make dinner appointments when trainings are all at dinner-inappropriate times? (e.g. 6-9pm)

10) Entertainment

Ok, the actual heading is 'League of Legends'. I've been stuck in Silver1 forever and I really want to climb to Gold league. Though looking at things, I'll probably be too tired when I get home everyday and just play one game for my free win. Apart from games, TV shows generally come back when school starts for some reason, so that's more time gone there. How to study?

~

Wow. Almost (didn't have #10 before edit) 10 facets to juggle. This is so daunting.

Dear Lord, please give me the strength and ability and wisdom to manage all of these commitments. Help me to know how to manage my time well, and prioritize things well. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

I s...stutter.

I have a psychological stutter. I think this definition of stutter best captures what I have: "Stuttering is caused by not being able to get out what we are trying to say". It is psychological, meaning it is all in my mind. It has no physiological causes, such as a short tongue or any physical defect. While the bulk of the first half of this post will be about my past and my stutter, the main message I want to convey has to do with how to be a confident person.  How are the two related? Read on to find out.

Highlights of 2012!

When I looked at last year's 'highlights of the year' blog post and saw that I wrote "This year was pretty… meh", I couldn't help but think 'bitch please, this year was fabulous!" hahaha. Indeed, this year was extremely eventful and I can't believe everything actually happened in a short span of one year. It seemed so long ago. Anyway. Let's begin with a walk down memory lane of the supposed doomsday year... 2012!

Adventures in USA - Final Day

I'm at the airport now, munching on a grilled cheese sandwich and sipping my iced tea. I still have 2 hours before I have to enter the boarding area, so that's a lot of time to think and reflect lulz.

I'm still in a state of denial that I'm leaving. I can't believe I'm actually over and done with this chapter of my life. If I close my eyes I can still remember vividly the scene on the day I left Singapore, with all my loved ones at the airport sending me off, and my gf all teary-eyed, wrapped up in my arms.

And when I open them I see myself seated in front of the departure gates of Logan International Airport, getting ready to leave this chapter of my life behind me.

A question I got a lot from my friends here in the past week was "Are you sad? (that you're leaving)" And every single time, my response had been "YES I am DAMN sad! I wish I could stay for another semester.. that would be perfect."

Indeed, I think one semester is too short. It's like, you just begin to get acculturalised; you just begin to form bonds with people here; you just begin to settle in to the weather - and then you have to leave. And then you have to re-calibrate yourself back to your home country, and forget every fixed action pattern you have acquired in the previous 4 months. And then you have to accept the fact that you will not be seeing some friends for a very, very long time. Some probably never again.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="403"] Two dear American friends[/caption]

In the past week I met up with all those that mattered. I had meals with the friends I had made here, hung out and played cards, taboo, etc. And when the time came to say goodbye, I gave them the best hug I had to bid farewell. I wasn't too emotional, though I had a heavy heart. I was nowhere close to tears at any point of time of any goodbye, but my heart was making a frowny face.

My friends in Singapore were like, hey, look forward to meeting us! Don't be so sad! But I don't think they understand (besides bestie, who has gone for exchange as well and gone through the same thing). Emotions do not balance like an equation. Increasing positive emotions do not counterbalance and hence eliminate negative emotions. While I can look forward to meeting my loved ones again, it does not take anything away from the sadness of leaving my friends here.

I do look forward to seeing my gf again though. The sight of her suddenly breaking down and sobbing when I left will always be etched in the tablets of my memories. And then again just before I went through the departure gates. It made me realize how important I was to her. It wasn't that I didn't know before, it is more of it accentuated the point. It put it in the spotlight and highlighted it and screamed out at me to treasure what I had, that many desire. To have someone love you like that, it's truly a blessing.

When I see her again, I know exactly what I will do. My arms will invite her in, and she will fall into me and I will hold her. I will hold her with such conviction that she'll know how long I've waited to do that, how much I will hold on to her and not let go, how much I've missed having her in my arms. I can imagine how my body would relax and my heart would sigh as I bury my head in the nook of her neck and let her smell wash over me. I would embrace the feeling of comfort and familiarity that she brings.

Before all that. Before I get back to the harsh, humid, hot reality of Singapore, I still have a long journey. My flight to New York is at 3PM, and my flight from New York to Singapore is at 11pm. That's another 7 or so hours of waiting. I will make another blog entry then I think. And then it's a 12.5 hour flight to Dubai, a FOUR hour stopover, and then a 7 hour flight back to SG. So, it's another 33.5 hours before I return to Singapore. Holy shit that's long.

Random thoughts:

  • Singapore's public transport is very good in terms of coverage of land area. There's SO much more walking to do in the US :/

  • Places like Subway and 7-eleven in Singapore suck. There's SO much more variety in these shops in the US!

  • I love how lemonade is an option together with the usual coke/sprite etc in fast food places! Why SG dont have!

Day 3 - San Jose en route to West Yellowstone

We went to San Jose to stay for a night before catching a 6AM flight to West Yellowstone. The hotel we stayed in at San Jose was SO posh-looking and nice !

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="498"] The hotel lobby. See the previous link for the facebook album for some room photos[/caption]

The flight to West Yellowstone needed a transit at Salt Lake City - and I was quite surprised with the plane we took to West Yellowstone, it's like the smallest plane I ever sat and it kept rattling! Lol. But after a while it was ok.  The plane is only like 15 rows and 3 seats each row

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="480"] West Yellowstone Airport ! I found it weird because there was no customs or anything once you landed you have arrived. I guess it's because this is kinda like a town and there's nothing of great value here that they need to prevent people from bringing stuff in[/caption]

After settling into our motel (Which was quite cosy and nice ), we went for lunch:

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="374"] 2 medium (12") pizzas for the 4 of us... and we couldn't finish it because the girls couldn't eat their share lol[/caption]

And after lunch we went to nap because the flight was very early for us and we barely slept. I woke up after 2 hours though, because I didn't want to have difficulties sleeping at night. So here I am! Blogging and uploading photos like a hardworking blogger. Rawr.

Btw I have no idea if anyone besides my gf is even reading this :/ Is it very boring. What more do you want to see, let me know!

To whoever is reading, thanks! <3
