One of my favourite puzzles is the substitution cypher. In it, each letter is substituted for another letter. For example 'chicken is sweet' could become 'dijdlfo jt txffu', in which the 'key' to solving it is just the letter before it (e.g. D is actually C, I is H, etc)

needs vs wants

i've decided to conduct a little social experiment on myself.

You know the old topic about needs and wants. Alot of us fortunate chaps have lots of wants and are not satisfied when we already fulfil all our needs, and instead want to pursue more wants. (human nature of unlimited wants keeps the world economy going :p there's some econs law abt this but i forgot)


And on the other hand there are people in the world who can't meet their basic needs of food, clothes, etc and are starving and all.



brr this is just scary. and sad :( (the irony is that the website i got this pic from was called 'godlovespeople.com'. hmm. )

SO ANYWAY. since enterring army and getting much more money than my entire life (yes, i only got meal allowance in the past.) .. i realised that i've been spending pretty extravagantly!

Just look at my extravagant lifestyle this year.. im gonna just go through my photobucket/blogger account to search for such evidence and things that i bought, etc.

okkk i think i digressed alot. and some of those arent even from this year , like prom =X hahaha. but yea u get the idea, those were luxuries that i could probably live without but i still had. and this year i had exceptional amount of luxuries

which probably explains why my bank account never had more than 2k at any point of time, and i havent been able to have above 1k just before payday. (right now it's below 1k already)

so ive decided.. i wanna save! so i'm going to do something that seems entirely paradoxical - whatever i want, i'm going to deliberately not get, and just satisfy my needs.
So for example, i want a pair of Levi's jeans now!! they got this awesome offer that if you give them an old pair of jeans they give u $50 off any pair of Levi's jeans! (that is above $100)
but according to my new logic, i'm going to NOT get them on purpose.

This way i save alot of money yknow! and well, i guess another word for this is thrifty.
Ok let me make a list of things that i want (yes i still want stuff, im such a greedy splurging pig.)
1) Levi's Jeans
2) mike! + headphones (for talking while playign games)
3) camera (im getting irritated with all the 8MP phones coming out.. just after i got my 5MP one. ok not JUST after. but. relatively )

weird

ive got a weird feeling.

It's an uneasy, unsatiable, dissatisfied, bored feeling. It's like, nothing i do can entertain me. Or rather, nothing i can do can competely satisfy my desire for entertainment. Does that even make sense?

dan gave me some links for some really funny videos by MadTV, spoofing heroes and LOST and the such. go search them on youtube, they're really funny, and i did enjoy watching them. but after watching them, i was like. ok what now.

same for playing warcraft.. just got matched against ranked #12 player which i lost of course. after the game.. i felt like doing SOMETHING. but i dunno what.

army blues? maybe. havent been in for a week.. a week of freedom and carefreeness. it was amazing. amazingly short. lol ok fine it was good, did lotsa things that i wanted to do, suchas watch my TV shows, play bball, had lunch with qin, went out with bestie, played drums.
Maybe that is it. i enjoyed my week too much, now that when i have to end it .. it's too much.

maybe i should start reading the stephenie meyer book that val bought me. The Host. it's kinda chim, and sci-fi doesnt really attract me. but on the cover has a little quote by some other author saying : "A fascinating, passionate and unique psychological thriller"
PSYCHOLOGICAL thriller? so i should like it shouldn't i? but it doesnt sound like it leh. sounds sci.fi.
but maybe cos ive only read one chapter. yea i think i shall go read it.

That resulted in us playing bball from 2-7!!! wow. that was like the longest time ever of bball. i think like everyone's inhibited bball spirit unleashed so all quite onz and not shack easily.

Didnt play THAT well, made some nice qieing baskets which i go past the team and stretch and manage to roll the ball in somehow. quite shiok those balls =)
jumpshots were spot on at the start.. but as time wore on i got worn down and started making normal shots (instead of jumpshots) and missed virtually all of them.
but after a long break.. the scoring came back. =) hehe. had fun overall.


claraaa wan qianling is so niiice! =) i enterred the tea fellowship place today looking for food.. then i made like a sulk cos there was no more food (followed aunty wiiinsome to 7eleven, so come back no more) then clara (who was on tea duty) saw me and signalled to me to follow her.
so i thought there was like leftover food in the kitchen.. so i followed

she magically appeared with a beautiful card and a cap! they're really really nice and meticulously done la, i show you pictures:

today was a good day.

had lunch with a friend i havent had a conversation with in real life before, but talk alot online,
watched highschoolmusical3 with my bestest friend and ate yummy hotdog for dinner

HSM3 was surprisingly good! haha. it was the first ever HSM movie i've watched (i watched bits and pieces of HSM1 only) , and i have to say i enjoyed it! some of the songs are really quite nice and catchy.. the story is kinda cheesy and predictable but that isn't the point. vanessa hudgens is just, like, hot! and according to bestie so is zac efron.. but whatever. haha.
im searching for the songs now but can't seem to find. ugh.

SAW FIVE IS HERE!!!








































saw this poster at PS and thought it was particularly eerie so decided to put it here =) in case you didnt know, Jigsaw, the main killer is dead (dont worry this doesn spoil the previous Saws at all, it doesnt matter if he's alive or dead, the ingenuity of it all makes them worth watching still :p ANYWAY, the poster itself at GV has a caption that goes: "Jigsaw is dead. but his games continues")
so that is like, a mask of Jigsaw. so some other guy is wearing it :S

Yes, i'm a huge fan of the Saw franchise. no, i'm not some sadist who enjoys watching people suffer. i just think the writer is damn creative in the different "methods" he can think up of.
And it's not just some hack and slash horror flick with no storyline. it has a storyline! and it's freaking ingenious, the way the writer does it, such that in saw 3 he seems to tie everything that happened in 1 and 2 together very nicely.

i cant seem to remember what happens in saw4 though i remember a particularly gory sequence which i think is at the start where they saw open Jigsaw's brain -_- it's like freaking 5 minutes long or something.. i think even the strongest stomachs will start to feel a little uneasy after some time. i had to look away for a while.

i wanna watch saw5! ugh. i heard the final film is saw6. i wonder how it'll end.

BUT BUT. the stupid thing is, i read that the original writers arent doing it anymore. saw 4 wasnt written by the original writers already. no wonder i have such poor recollection of it! it must have been lousy.

Hiroes

Heroes is just so fantastic!! ahh
When it first started out it was already good, and it seemed like there was a central character of Peter Petrelli which the show would revolve around. but now it's clear that EVERYONE is a central character, and the story just someone allows everyone to interweave.

and the comic moments that Hiro provides!! i bet the first season of Heroes wouldnt have been as popular without Hiro Nakamura! hahaha. the latest episode was chao funny!
"Harloee?? Miister arfrikan eee-sark?"

ahahaha!! that line was just damn funny

and now with the introduction of new characters and their different abilities.. it's getting freaking cool cos like certain characters seem imba-ly powerful (like the puppet master fellow, and now Mr petrelli seems quite informidable too) and you have to think how to defeat him. seriously i think Heroes has great potential to be some RPG or something.
Imagine the boss is like, sylar. then u must think of some strategy to fight him, and you can't just outright confront him cos he is so powerful.. maybe must bring the haitian, then.. blabla.

so cool right!! i'll totally play the game la!

suffering in pain

i just loveee Chuck! It's such a great series with a talented lead actor, who portrays the geek-nerd character just SO well, a good cast, as well as a well written script.
there is a perfect balance of comedy, action , and in the latest action, romance!! finally some progress!! i'm a total Charah fan =)
and Sarah (yvonne strahovsky) is just hot!! haha. sucha hot name too.. is that russian? i dunno

went for my first ever christian seminar today @ orchard rd presbyterian church (it's opposite Cathay).. the theme of the whole series was 'Struggling with God', an exposition on the book of Job.

First night was pretty interesting with what i thought was a key point about what the speaker thought was 'marks of a real believer.'
He said that a real believer (e.g. not one that just pays lip service to God and says God is good when everythign is going well in his life. then when he loses his wealth/health he abandons God etcetc) is one that will feel the pain of suffering

This is because we (haha yes im claiming i am one. hopefully i can live up to it) believe that God is a just God, hence it seems like in a logical sense, good people should get good things and bad ppl should be punished.

But of course, this isn't the case in the real world. in the real world good people suffer too. and because of the premise that we believe in a just God, we wonder WHY this is happening to us, whereas non-believers dont have this problem, and they simply dismiss it as karma/whatever.


ok i think i didnt summarize the points very well.. cos i dont have the notes with me. ugh.
but i thought that the talk today was very beneficial for those who are undergoing trials and such. and i thought it had an interesting psychological aspect which timo unknowingly included -
he asked "Is it necessary for someone who is sad to undergo the grieving process like Job?"
like should we let the person weep and mourn and not just feed him 'cliche christian lines'?

This opened up the psychological aspect which i really hope i will study - grieving process! for a person undergoing sorrow and such.. are there phases of it? how should each phase be handled?
what are the characteristics of each phase?

ah! i'm so hyped up about this. maybe it's in behavioural psychology? i dunno! i wanna learn! stuff like this makes me all-so-interested in studying psychology =)

and i finally have an answer for people who ask me 'what do you wanna work as next time?'
everyone assumes that if i studying psych ill be a shrink. u know , the person who sits in a chair and listens to your problems.

but no! i wanna be this definition of a psychologist:
" A person trained and educated to perform psychological research, testing, and therapy."

i wanna do research! in whatever aspect of psychology. you know people even research and study on how doctors treat patients and their thought process when evaluating a patient. so cool la.

went to east coast park today for some games.. company cohesion actually. armyy. kena thrown into sea . ha. put on a good struggle though. first time they tried was just 2 guys and i managed to take down one of them so that attempt failed. then second time the whole group came to tackle me, i took down 2 ppl before giving up and let them carry me . ha.

alot of throwingpplintothesea, some games.. blabla. overall.. relatively enjoyable . though i injured my already injured knee. damn pain la, i couldnt walk at all at one point.

went to play pool at parkwayparade with the specs after that.. quite fun.. cos i owned :) hahaha. lost only about 2-3 times.. stayed at my table for quite long. won probably 10-12 games. the tables are damn nice la! the balls especially. like very nice to hit.

grr but damn sian, i bought a screen protector for my ipodnano and i screwed up the application!! :( :( i shoudl've asked the sales person to do it for me.


there's like stupid air bubbles! grr. i should just take it out and redo it.. but the thing is there was a sticker that was on the protector, and when i peeled off some adhesive got left behind and cant be scratched out. grr. so it's damn ugly.
i'm gonna buy another one and ask the salesperson to do it for me :/


on a random note.. im sad! my best fren is being totally dao. never reply sms at all. but .. i guess she's quite busy with PW and all. hmph. :(

sian la, every sunday afternoon rain then cant play much bball. played a little only.. only significant nice move was a step-back crossover + shot which i like to do.
played abit of pingpong too! haha was quite fun. made quite a few smashes. rawr.

ok, here are just some pictures from the short camwhore session with jesslyn. she's a professional really, just check out her blog .. practically every entry has an average of 5 photos of her. hahaha.

she has a .. natural dimple or something. first few pics we were trying to compare dimples. but after awhile i realised even when she's not smiling she has this hole on her right cheek .. think cos her baby fat cheeks. hahaha. :D

i know some ppl complain that the photos are too big or what.. but on my screen it looks perfect leh. and others say it's ok. and it's kinda a waste to put the photos so small when it's 5MP =D haha. so i'll just put those that i think are nice bigger, the rest smaller.
