Light Show at Marina Bay Sands

How often have you been left in awe at something beautiful?

It could be a person, an act, a breathtaking view of nature, an exquisite work of art, or a sophisticated piece of technology.

I was left in awe last Saturday, on a date with my girlfriend to Marina Bay Sands. Let's begin from the top.

I told her I had never been to MBS before, so she suggested going there for our semi-impromptu date. We decided to eat at TCC because they had a 1-for-1 promotion going on. Speaking of TCC, didn't they used to be called The Coffee Connoisseur?  But now they're called The Connoisseur Concerto. Maybe it was after they diversified from being coffee specialists to include more food items as well? Hmm.

[caption id="attachment_1580" align="alignnone" width="500"] My grilled chicken dish. Quite disappointing because the 'garden salad' turned out to be large inedible besides the potatoes. I mean, who eats the red stuff and brinjal and all that!? The chicken was really good though.[/caption]

I must say, while the iPhone's camera is pretty sucky especially in dimly-lit areas, it takes pretty darn good food photos!

After dinner, we decided to walk around abit and while listening to a live jazz band we saw this interesting booth:

The Social Pavilion! If you look next to the sign there's this bright area, which is actually a green screen. So what you do is you go in, choose a fake background to pose to, and it takes your picture for you and uploads it on the MBS Facebook as well as prints out a postcard-sized copy for you. All for free! Being the photo-happy person I am, I dragged the reluctant gf in with me.

Ok it kind of failed because we aren't aligned properly, but you get the idea! Our pose was the most creative lor, everyone else was doing boring stiff upright poses.

After this photobooth, we walked along the pier and eventually reached this boardwalk area which we deduced was the area everyone went to watch the light show, and after checking out the timings we decided to stay and wait for the next light show.

Now, I didn't really expect much from the laser/light show -  I thought it was literally just some waving/dancing lights. I mean, how nice can lights be??

What happened in the next 10 minutes was one of the most magical moments of my life.

Ok ok, I'm probably exaggerating it abit. But I think what made it more awesome was that I didn't EXPECT it to be so good and cool. And one thing to note is that the photos make it look like shit actually, it really doesn't do it justice. Pictures can't capture how nice it was.

Mists of water shoot up to form a screen, and the projectors project images on the water screen.

[caption id="attachment_1586" align="alignnone" width="500"] Words are projected on the mist 'screen'[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1588" align="alignnone" width="500"] This is actually a beautiful flower and an example of how ugly the camera makes it look[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1590" align="alignnone" width="500"] The lights and lasers were REALLY cool and nice; szehong kept making gushing comments which I just smiled and nodded to them because I was in a state of semi-awe[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1592" align="alignnone" width="500"] We could really feel the heat from the jets of flames shooting up from the ground.[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1596" align="alignnone" width="500"] If you couldn't tell from the previous two pictures, BUBBLES were sprayed all over from the sides! The previous pics showed the jubilant kids running around trying to poke the bubbles[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1597" align="alignnone" width="500"] more BUBBLESS!! Szehong was excitedly going 'SO PRETTY!!' continually while I just sat there with a goofy smile on my face in silent appreciation.[/caption]

After 12 minutes or so, the light show ended and the audience let out a collective groan. Ok fine, they didn't groan but you can feel the emptiness when the show ended. Such a magical experience!

[caption id="attachment_1598" align="alignnone" width="500"] After the show ended, they projected some words on the mist so we quickly went to take some photos with it[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1599" align="alignnone" width="500"] Spot the difference[/caption]

And the next picture is somewhat an anticlimax:

!!! Because she took so long, the words on the mist disappeared!! So I was left pointing at empty space like an idiot lol.

Best decision in a while to stay and watch the laser/light show, I highly recommend anyone who has not seen it to go check it out! It shows daily at 8PM, 930PM and 11PM. It was truly a magical experience...

And I wouldn't have chosen anyone else to spend it with :)

  1. [...] reminded me of another time when I was just left in awe – at the MBS Light Show. This was the same feeling. I just wanted to admire the beauty of the white landscape, and watch [...]
