How the news should be

My mother is a compulsive worrier, and much of it is due to the Straits Times. She's the kind of person who glances through the headlines, spots a sensationalized headline, then reads the whole story, then warns me about it 24 times, then plays through the scenario in her head but this time with me as the protagonist, then warns me another 8 times. Then she continues worrying that it may actually happen to her or someone she knows and tells everyone about it.

It's really all the news' fault. It's an unfair portrayal really - for every 1 robbery reported, there's another 10000 people who did not get robbed in the exact same circumstances. For every molest case on the train, there's another 99999 people who did not get molested on the train. Presenting only the negatives leads to a certain expectation bias in people and unnecessary paranoia.

Here's the kind of news I would publish if I was editor:

A China national who entered the bedroom of a co-tenant and had a chat with her was not jailed for six weeks on Tuesday.

Zhong Zihao, 25, then an electrical assembler, admitted to entering into the bedroom of the 19-year-old student, shaking her hands and having a delightful conversation which lasted for two hours.

The 19-year-old-student, who declined to be named, had this to say: "(He) was very kind and friendly. He asked about my family and how they were doing, and even offered me some cake!"

The court heard that he was in the kitchen in the early hours on Jan 4 when he found some spare keys. He recognized this as the student's bedroom keys and promptly returned it to her.

"I knew I had to do the right thing," Zhong said. "I always return lost keys when I find them."

He entered the victim's bedroom with the pretext of returning the victim's spare keys. They ended up having a long, meaningful conversation and the two still remain friends.

And another one:

A young man who did not molest or sexually abuse a 17-year-old girl on their first date was not jailed for any duration on Thursday.

Choo Chen Hung, 24, admitted to having a great time at Block 932 Yishun Road at about midnight on April 20, 2011.

A district court heard that Choo contacted the victim after getting her number through a mutual friend on April 19. They arranged to meet at McDonald's at Northpoint Shopping Centre at about midnight.

While sitting outside the fast-food restaurant, Choo suggested that they order a Double McSpicy meal but she refused.

The 17-year-old girl, who only wanted to be known as Lin, said: "I was on a diet so I definitely not want a Double McSpicy. We compromised and got a single McSpicy meal instead."

The couple had their supper and chatted late into the night. They are reportedly having their second date tomorrow night.

NUS Arts Camp 2012

Arts Camp just ended less than 24 hours ago, and after hibernating for 13 hours (I think I could probably sleep for 2 more hours but I have things to be done and my throat was really dry), it's time to write this post. This will be a reflections/recap kind of post, and will be naturally long and windy. Let's go.

EDIT: It ended up taking more than a day to write this post, and I was waiting for photos too.

I had several goals for Arts Camp when I signed up.

1) Mingle around more

Last year I went for Arts Camp as a crasher, and I didn't really mix around that much. What that resulted in was in the OG card that I got in the end, many people wrote 'didn't get to talk to you much, but you seem nice' or variations of this. This year I wanted to interact more with everyone and try to talk to everyone and not just talk to an exclusive few.

2) Be a more proactive councillor

Being a crasher last year, I naturally didn't feel any inclination to take any responsibility or do anything. I mean, I am here voluntarily and I'm not an official councillor, so why work so hard? I was slacking around (with fellow crashers) and didn't really contribute much. Less tiring? Yes. Fulfilling? Maybe not as much. Thus this year I signed up as an official councillor, despite being the only one from my batch doing so (as well as being the oldest councillor).

3) Make new good/close friends

I believe in quality over quantity. I would rather have 1 close friend than 10 normal friends. I'm not particularly social (naturally) and am an introvert so I don't thrive in social situations. Thus it's not about meeting new people, it's about meeting the right people.

With that, let me launch into the recap. I will talk about whether I achieved these goals at the end of the entry.

Update on Life

Yes yes, I haven't blogged in a while. But that's because I've been busy as a bee!

1) Boston SEP

I finally received my acceptance letter from Boston! Yay! My exchange program to Boston University is now confirmed, and all that is left to do is finalize the travel arrangements.... which is a PAIN IN THE ASS!

I have plans to travel California before semester begins, and I'm going with some of the fellow NUS people going to Boston for SEP. Trip planning is NOT easy. We've been doing research about housing and transport, and it's SO hard to find an 'ideal' hostel. It's like, there's always something wrong - too noisy, too far away, too dodgy, etc. And when the hostel is perfect .... they only have bookings available for even numbers (2, 4, 6, etc) when there are THREE of us travelling

So yea after like 2 weeks of planning the only thing we've booked so far is our housing in San Francisco. Up next will be the flight ticket, then our housing and transport in the areas we're visiting.

Just in case anyone's interested, our rough itinerary is as such:

San Francisco -> Yellowstone -> Grand Canyon -> Los Angeles -> Boston

I'm not a big fan of the two natural areas (Yellostone/Grand canyon) but the two China girls I'm going with are quite keen so I'm just tagging along. I want to check out the beaches! Clean beaches please!

Talking about U SA, appl ying for a vis a is a bitch! I haven't even got my v isa and I've had to pay $400+ in administration fees how ridiculous is that!! But I love Ame rica and really want to go so in case the vi sa processors are reading this while processing my application please approve it thanks ^^ (and enjoy my $400 eating pizza or whatever you do with the money)
(the random spaces in this paragraph are my lame attempts at preventing this post from getting picked up by Google lolol)

2) Arts Camp 2012!

Yes yes that's just right around the corner... literally. Well ok it's not literally because if it's 'literally' it would mean if I walk around the corner it's there. I mean, it's REALLY close, as in, it's starting tonight! Day 0 for counsellors, that is.

Been having long meetings with the OG or the House for precamp prep, on Mon and Tues. Shack man! I don't like going out for the entire day (and I was out the entire day for both days). I need to recharge my introvert batteries!

Yup yup don't know what I got myself into but I'm a counsellor at this camp... hope I can transform into some social, entertaining person and interact well with the freshies and let them have a good camp!

I'm not looking forward to the lack of sleep and all though... you're always fueled by adrenaline during camps (hence doing loud fun cheers to boost yourselves even more) because without it you'll just crash and collapse. I want my sleeeeeep. But oh well. Praying for strength and endurance to last the whole camp! The next blog post will probably be some sort of recap post of arts camp haha. Let's hope I get into nice photos so I can post them up ^^

Ok that's all folks! Time to sleep and meditate and prepare for Arts Camp hehe. Ciaoz!

EDIT: I realized some followers of my blog (I've no idea why they follow me) are fitness blogs of some sort, so just a quick update on my progress-
I'm at 50kg for bench 5x5 (did one set of 60kg with a friend supporting), 60kg for squats, 55 for deadlifts, and more or less given up on barbel rows and doing chinups instead lol.  Yupz.

Light Show at Marina Bay Sands

How often have you been left in awe at something beautiful?

It could be a person, an act, a breathtaking view of nature, an exquisite work of art, or a sophisticated piece of technology.

I was left in awe last Saturday, on a date with my girlfriend to Marina Bay Sands. Let's begin from the top.

I know who realFASS is!

For those of you who are unfamiliar, @realFASS is a parody/fake account of NUS FASS, and it has been running for over a year now, with its tweets revolving around random comments on current affairs, lame jokes and NUS-related tweets.

Some examples would be:

"#12daysofFASS" series where it tweeted a modified version of the song '12 days of Christmas', with a FASS/NUS theme.

"BREAKING: Criminal who failed English in Primary School has just broke out of prison!
He could never complete a sentence"

"#thatawkwardmoment when you are studying in CL and you stretch your legs and accidentally kick the person sitting across you."

And so on. They also had a blog which I made no secret about contributing to.

So, after a long time, I finally found out who was behind the @realFASS twitter account! -drumroll

Fitness Journal #6

I've been lifting weights for about a month now, and have been on my current training program for about 3 weeks. (The first week of weights was like random) The program of choice is Stronglifts 5x5, and it looks like this:

Workout A
Squats 5x5
Bench Press 5x5
Barbell Rows 5x5

Workout B
Squats 5x5
Shoulder Press 5x5
Deadlifts 1x5

So you basically alternate between A and B every workout, adding 2.5kg each workout.

For the first 2 weeks + or so, I felt I wasn't really benefiting much from the workouts, because the weights were too light (It is recommended that you start with an empty bar, 20kg). I would leave the gym feeling having accomplished something (like some psychological effect), but my body wouldn't feel tired at all.

Recently, the weights are getting heavier, so I do feel a bit more tired after each workout. My current weights are posted here (all + about 2.5/5kg since that was a few workouts ago).

I've began to modify each workout abit to add in some accessory exercises because I am a vainpot and I want to have nicer ____ (fill in any body part). For example, I end off every workout with some arm work which can be forearm curls, bicep curls, tricep curls, etc. I've also replaced Barbell Rows with Chin ups, because they basically train the same area and I feel I'm somehow not doing Barbell rows with proper form as I don't feel the strain on my back at all (but more of my quads).

I've also taken to adding ab-work every workout, as well as doing benchpress every work out (instead of every other workout). Come on body bulk up!

Cardio is a bitch really... I would gladly do twice the lifting than do a session of cardio. But I need to do cardio because of this stupid blob of flat called my tummy/belly/paunch. I will be alternating between HIIT (30/60 sprint/jogs) and 20 min jogs. Hope to be doing cardio 3 times a week... though it's soooo tempting to just skip one, unlike weights which I will never skip because of lack of discipline because I enjoy it!

Sorry for really boring blog posts haha I'll try to write more interesting stuff next time. But I do want to chronicle my progress and process, thus all these Fitness Journals! Next post probably has to do with something personal, so stay tuned for that ;)
