Highlights of 2016!

Completed one cycle of NS!

After somehow avoiding reservist for 5 years, I got called up this year :( The 2 weeks was pretty tough mainly because of the lack of sleep (waking up at 530 every day wth), but glad I made it through. One down, nine more to go -_-

Cleared IPPT during reservist, despite running like a tortoise

Watched a live soccer match for the first time in my life

As part of the perks of my company, got 2 free tickets to an S-League match so decided to check it out. Was a pretty boring match, but oh well.

I switched jobs (again).

I still question myself on whether this was the right decision, but I guess I'll find out in 2017 when my 1-yr contract ticks to an end. If I had stayed on where I was, I would have a cushy office and perhaps clocked '2 years' at a company to look better on my resume, provided the company didn't continue to cut people which it seemed like it would. Oh well.

Started riding to work!

Because my new job was within cycling distance, I bought a bicycle and began cycling to work. Now I've grown fairly attached to my bicycle, and can't imagine not cycling anymore (which is likely to happen in 2017). I'm gonna miss the 15 minute journeys to/fro work :(

Met an old friend

My exchange in the US was one of the best periods of my life, and whenever I get to re-live any aspect of it I'm glad. This year one of my Asian American friends Melody from Boston actually came to SG because her cousin was getting married. Of course we had to meet up!

Got to hang out with her and her cousin which was a pretty good time. Forgot how bubbly and talkative she was, and so was initially nervous about meeting up, but turns out the worry was for nothing haha.

Went to Timbre for the first time and discovered 53A

Decided to tag along with colleagues who went to Timbre (Substation), and discovered the super talented local band 53A! The frontrunner Sara Wee is so cool <3 haha

Performed in a band

Even though I've been playing for church service for years, I've never actually performed for people. Got the opportunity to do so for a work event this year, and I must say we sounded pretty damn good! Quite a pity that nobody videoed it :( My favourite piece was our medley of Rude - I'm Yours. I learnt a tribal beat on the cajon for it and thought it was pretty cool.

Got married!

In spite of the difficult circumstances leading up to it, it turned out pretty damn well. Everything was pretty smooth, my best man Darren handled any hiccups flawlessly, Pity I could't invite more, but we wanted to keep the event small and cozy.

My favourite shot

In relation to this, I also enjoyed our full day pre-wedding photoshoot. It was very tiring but very rewarding to see how the pictures turned out.

Watched a musical in Singapore for the first time in my life

In quite a last minute decision, we caught Wicked in one of its final runs. Turned out pretty good! Though the only song I knew was Defying Gravity haha.

Started and stopped WoW

The expansion, Legion, came out this year, so I wanted to try it. Went back to playing one of my favourite games of all time, and had some pretty damn memorable moments, such as our first Mythic Ilgynoth kill which was very dramatic. Unfortunately, life caught up and I decided it was better to stop playing. Oh well, good bye WoW forever.

Went for honeymoon in Germany and Prague!

The trip was fairly eventful, with its highlights and lowlights (is this a thing?). The bell-clanging demons will always be THE story I tell people if they ask about the trip. Our car clipping the pavement and busting its tyre was especially memorable too. All in all, an interesting trip that was very cold. Made a blog psot on it here: http://crazerk.blogspot.sg/2016/12/honeymoon-trip-to-germany-and-czech.html

Went sailing for the first time in my life

Was jioed by churchies to go for a free sailing event organised by DBS, and was glad for it! Went on a small sail boat and was out at sea (well, the Marina waterfront) for half an hour. Got to control the sails and steer the boat. Pretty cool!

Black Mirror episodes ranked from best to worst

To just view my episode rankings, just scroll down to the next line of red arrows. In between the two lines of red arrows I'll be explaining what Black Mirror is about, why I'm writing this post, and how I will be ranking the episodes.

There won't be spoilers, until I say so. Don't worry, the spoiler alert tag will be huge.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

What is Black Mirror?

Unlike a typical TV series, each episode is a brand new story with a different cast and theme. They are really varied in what they cover, but the best way to describe the episodes would be technological dystopia / satire. According to Wikpedia:

Black Mirror is a British television anthology series ... that features speculative fiction with dark and satirical themes that examine modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies.

Each episode picks a certain theme (or themes) which usually involves some futuristic or current technology/system (e.g. social media) and imagines a possible future with it. The result is usually somewhat disturbing or intriguing.

Some commentators have likened it to The X-Files in terms of the show's format, but more technology-centric than supernatural-centric.

Why am I writing this post?

I decided to write this post because I disagreed with how most 'popular' review/recap websites were rating / ranking the episodes. I always read episode recaps from various sources such as EW, Vulture, Vox, and AVclub, but for some weird reason they were dissing the episodes that I enjoyed and loving the episodes that I didn't quite like.

Thus, I decided to share my own point of view... some episodes really deserve more credit!

How will I be ranking the episodes?

I consider some factors such as coolness of technology/system used, pacing of episode, and the 'wow' factor I feel after the episode. I won't be recapping each episode, but will just make references here and there.

Post edit : Wow. This was much tougher than I expected. I had an initial ranking list, but as I wrote my justifications, I realised I disagreed with myself and re-ordered them. And then the more I thought about some episodes, the more I wanted to move them (up or down). The list has underwent a lot of thought and iterations before this final product.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I will share my rankings before I delve into the explanations, so that those who want a spoiler-free experience can just stop here and decide which episodes to watch.

From worst to best:
#13 - S02E03 - The Waldo Moment
#12 - S03E03 - Shut up and Dance
#11 - S01E02 - 15 Million Merits
#10 - S03E02 - Playtest
#9 - S02E01 - Be Right Back
#8 - S01E03 - The Entire History of You
#7 - S03E01 - Nosedive

#4 - S01E01 - National Anthem
#3 - S03E05 - Men Against Fire
#2 - S02E02 - White Bear
#1 - Btwn S2 and S3, Christmas Special - White Christmas

 (Warning: SPOILERS ahead)

#13 - The Waldo Moment (S02E03)

I must confess, I didn't watch this episode in full. I watched about a third of it and got really bored. I read the synopsis, and got even more bored. It didn't seem like it would get any better.

Basically, there didn't seem to be any new interesting technology or use of existing technology, and is basically more of a political satire. To quote AVclub.com in their recap of this episode:

What if a truth-telling, apolitical comedian ran for political office and started gaining real traction? This scenario is taken to its logical extreme with Waldo, a profane blue cartoon bear whose entry into a local by-election is initially part of a marketing scheme cooked up by TV execs to promote an impending pilot.

In the light of the Trump presidency, this episode's premise doesn't seem so absurd anymore.

Nonetheless, I didn't like it, I didn't watch it, so technically I should exclude this from ranking. But for convenience, I'll just place this at #13.

#12 - Shut up and Dance (S03E03)

If this was a random short film or an episode not called 'Black Mirror', I may have ranked it a lot higher. The episode had decent pacing, dialogue, build up of tension to its shocking climax, a lot of 'what's going on'. Enough to pull you in... but satisfy you?

I have two main grouses with this episode.

Firstly, Black Mirror tends to involve some kind of technology or have some new media concept as the overarching theme of its episode, and they will stretch it to its satirical extremes. What was it for this episode?? The danger of leaving your webcam on? The lack of an interesting theme was glaring in this very ordinary episode of television.

The trope of 'Character A gets recorded doing something incriminating, gets blackmailed into doing a series of things' is nothing new, and Black Mirror needed to pull it off in a more shocking or twisted way for it to be an effective Black Mirror episode.

Which brings me to my second point - the ending. When a story uses this blackmail angle, there's usually some bigger plot to tie it to, related to the blackmailer's intentions. Other stories have woven this into more complex plots, with the recent trend being to bombings, assassinations, stealing something etc.

However, Shut Up and Dance chose to go for the easy way out - there is no bigger plot at all. It seems like the only purpose was to see how far they could push someone, and then just reveal the 'secret' anyway. It could be viewed as a classic Black Mirror twisted ending that leaves you feeling disturbed, or a convenient cop-out that feels disappointing. For me, it was more of the latter.

#11 - 15 Million Merits (S01E02)

It actually pains me to rank this episode so low because honestly it wasn't bad, and I did like it! But the problem is, there are stronger episodes in Black Mirror (this goes to show how solid the series is on a whole), thus SOME episode HAS to be ranked lower.

The conclusion of the show was disturbingly believable - it made perfect sense given the context they were in that Bing would be given a 'vodcast/show' after his emotional monologue. It was equal parts amusing and disturbing.

What I didn't like about the episode was the pacing of the first one or two thirds, which felt slightly draggy. I understand the need to establish the routine of the 'commoners' and to build up the dystopian world they were in, but it could have been shorter. More time could have been spent developing the relationship between Bing and Abi to make their romance(?) / relationship more convincing, such that he would be willing to give up his inheritance + farm up another 15 million points to get on the show again.

#10 - Playtest (S03E02)

The concept of augmented reality isn't new and has been explored in many other shows (and is even somewhat moving towards reality now). Therefore, for Black Mirror to pull it off as well, the execution needed to be very clever.

The episode tries to do so with its triple fakeout at the end, which some reviewers marked them down for because they felt cheated. Personally, I don't think the idea of a multi-layered experience is bad (hey, we all loved it in Inception didn't we?), but I felt the execution wasn't particularly satisfying.

I did like the irony (?) that in avoiding his biggest fear (that his mother had dementia as well) and ignoring his mother's calls, he somewhat caused his own death as his mother only called at the moment because he had not been picking up his previous calls.

The middle portion of the episode was fairly strong, with the show's take of the horror genre being fairly decent, which kept this episode off the bottom of the rankings.

#9 - Be Right Back (S02E01)

If there was any episode in the pre-Netflix era (i.e. Season 3) that I wish could have been in Season 3 instead, this would be one of them. This episode would have been served better with a slightly longer duration, to further develop the character of Ash before he died.

In not doing so, we are forced to hear lines like 'you didn't use to be like that!' and automatically believe and understand what this meant, when Martha was complaining about android-Ash versus real Ash.

I felt this could have played out a lot stronger if we actually knew Ash's personality better, and thus we, as the audience, can empathize with Martha when android-Ash does not react in just quite the same way as real Ash. Instead, the author chose to make Ash glued to his phone screen, I suppose to hint at the fact that Ash was on social media a lot, and hence the android service could learn from his social media patterns.

The last scene on the cliff where android-Ash immediately learns based on feedback that Martha gave to beg for his life was brilliant - I wish there was more of this slipped in in the prior scenes as well. That would have added to the eerie effect of the android learning to be more and more 'human'.

Overall, a thought-provoking episode on could-be technology (especially given how machine learning is developing so quickly to take advantage of big data), with a classic eerie ending - android Ash is left in the attic, only to be visited once a year.

#8 - Entire History of You (S01E03)

The episode had an intriguing concept - what if you could play back all of your memories to watch and share? It seems like quite a natural point for technology to develop till, and something we could imagine happening.

Even though the episode's arc was predictable, it builds up gradually and makes you root against it. You want to believe that the Ffion did not have an affair, but at the same time you eagerly want Liam to press harder to uncover the truth.

What develops is a captivating downward spiral as revelation after revelation comes, and you can feel the emotional hits that Liam takes with each piece of news. The ending is eerie and solemn, as Liam surgically removes the grain to try to remove the pain.

I would love to have ranked this ep higher, but I felt the other episodes were just better.

#7 - Nosedive (S03E01)

This episode takes a simple idea - that we all crave social validation - and expounds it in a hilarious, all-out manner. I realised it isn't really that far-fetched - Uber already has a similar culture where driver/passenger tries to be nice to each other to get a good rating, and the ratings do have a real effect on you.

The episode shines with the strong performance of Bryce Dallas Howard as Lacie, portraying her believably as being 'disgustingly fake' but still not going over the top. I liked that the plot developed quite naturally and you can't help but root for her.

The last third of the episode is when everything goes downhill and gets a little uncomfortable - from her meltdown at the wedding to the prison. It doesn't make you feel satisfied or happy watching this, but I suppose it's the typical Black Mirror ending that makes you really uneasy, yet feel that 'yea things SHOULD turn out that way'. Lacie finally got cathartic release, and happily unloads on her fellow prisoner. -Cut to black-. Damn.

I originally ranked this ep much higher, because there really wasn't anything WRONG about this. But I feel that the other episodes were just stronger. The core concept of this episode isn't anything new or interesting, and they simply took something that exists today and played out the extreme consequences. A good episode? Yes. A strong episode? There are stronger ones.

#6 - San Junipero (S03E04)

I must confess, I almost felt like turning off the episode after 10 minutes. The ep didn't feel like it was going anywhere, didn't seem particularly compelling, similar to The Waldo Moment. Thankfully, my wife read ahead and said 'KEEP WATCHING!!'

When the twist hits, and you realise what San Junipero really is, BAM. The episode then slowly lays out who Kelly and Yorkie really are, and you can't help but feel for both characters. Yorkie, the 21-yo who became a quadriplegic because she came out of the closet; Kelly, the aged lady whose husband chose a 'natural' death instead of being uploaded to the cloud.

Fascinating concept that was played out really well in the episode. The BDSM (?) club made a lot of sense, as everyone there can't really feel anything, and thus they keep pushing the boundaries to try to feel something, anything.

I did wish the first third of the episode could have been shorter (a niggling issue with many episodes in Season 3... thanks Netflix -_- ), though I guess the director/writer was teasing us and trying to see whether we could gradually figure out (as they popped through the different eras, and the many hints [e.g. "We only have 2 hours tonight!])

I also didn't really like how the episode ended... come on, we can't have happy endings in Black Mirror! Haha but seriously, you would expect a more thought-provoking ending than a simple 'happy ending' of Kelly joining Yorkie in San Junipero.

#5- Hated in the Nation (S03E06)

So many cool ideas in this episode, but of course the central theme is fascinating and scary - how online shaming can go horribly wrong. It is extremely relevant given how this happens very often now, as online vigilantes can pull out an offending person's personal details and name and shame them.

I felt the show's take of it was very clever, and the twist where it's the participants of the #deathto hashtag that were being targeted was brilliant.

There were also strong and convincing performances by its two female leads, who many have likened to the dynamic between Mulder and Scully in The X-Files. In fact, there apparently was an episode about killer bees in The X-Files too.

Could the episode have been shorter? Yes, of course. But it never really felt draggy at any point, as the plot developed quite naturally and in a believable manner. The ending was strange though - why did Blue have to fake death to catch Garrett Scholes? Didn't really make sense. And what does 'Got him' even mean, is she going to kill him? Feed him to killer bees? Post his photo on Twitter? Not very sure why they chose to end it that way.

I thought of a very Black Mirror-ish way to end it. Parke, after testifying, walks out into a car amidst the angry public, which cuts to multiple tweets of #deathtoParke. Next scene, she's at home, and goes about a very normal routine of changing her clothes, preparing for bed, etc. Then as the camera pans over and out of the window, looking in at her, a robot bee suddenly lands on the window. -fade to black-

#4- National Anthem (S01E01)

This episode seems to rank a little high given how simple and straightforward it was. However, I thought it was a very strong pilot episode that set the tone for the rest of the series, and had little (or no) flaws, thus deserving of its high ranking.

This episode's strength is its directing and pacing. The episode's not-so-subtle dig at how we love and devour sensational media is executed wonderfully. The fact that it uses a very simple, singular and absolutely ridiculous idea, and is able to play it out for a very suspenseful, compelling 45 minutes, shows the strength of the directing and writing.

Similar to Shut Up and Dance, there isn't really any fancy new technology like other Black Mirror episodes. However, the slow, uncomfortable build up to the eventual realisation of 'omg it's really going to happen' makes this pilot episode one of the most compelling ones to watch. I love the subtle lines that the writer includes, such as the Prime Minister's aide advising him to 'take a long time so that it doesn't seem like he is enjoying it'.

And of course, the twisted ending which sets the stage for how Black Mirror episodes are likely to end  - leaving you intrigued yet deeply disturbed - the Prime Minister actually did it for nothing, as the princess was released before he started 'the deed'. Oink oink. Well played.

#3 - Men Against Fire (S03E05)

The two complex and thought-provoking issues were brilliantly interwoven in this episode - eugenics, and how technology made it possible to overcome soldiers' reluctance to shoot to kill during war (apparently a true statistic/fact).

I love twists, and the episode sets it up so wonderfully - you are led to believe the episode is going one way - some typical zombie-killing story. Shame on me for thinking that, because this is Black Mirror!!

Like all Netflixed-Season 3 episodes, the episode takes its time to build up the context, and allows some free verbal banter, especially the hilarious crude lines from Raiman (Black Mirror really likes to break gender norms, such as with Raiman, and with the two female leads in Hated by the Nation). It builds up ever so gradually to the twist, and when it hits you, you can't help but feel a sense of oh-shit and oh-no at the same time.

The rest of the episode completes the story, and I thought the idea of MASS is really smart. Soldiers can't shoot to kill? Let them see disgusting zombie-like roaches, and they will fire away. Throw in the bigger idea of eugenics and it rounds up this very thought-provoking and well-written episode of Black Mirror.

The episode ends in classic Black Mirror solemnness - not exactly a happy ending, but is a very natural conclusion, and leaves you feeling uneasy (Similar to endings of The Entire History of You and Nosedive, even Be Right Back).

#2 - White Bear (S02E02)

Wow. I don't even know where to begin. This is one episode where all forty-four minutes are fully utilised, unlike some other episodes (-cough- Season 3 Netflix bloat -cough), even the end credits!

The episode kicks off with suspense, and the audience is as clueless as Victoria as she has no idea where she is or what is going on. I love how she wanders around trying to find out what's happening while all the strangers point their phones at her, a hint towards how people nowadays are more likely to whip out their smartphones to take a photo of an accident rather than call an ambulance.

The action and intensity is kept up for a good 20-30 minutes, until the shocking twist and revelation - that Victoria is not exactly the victim here....

The rest of the episode is almost peripheral, as they let you reel from the shock and process what this actually means, as they indirectly explain the whole thing by showing you the setup and preparatory work before Victoria restarts her day.

This episode almost ranks top for me as it left me feeling SO conflicted and mindblown. Should you feel sorry for Victoria? After all, she did just stand by and video-record when a little girl was being tortured and killed. But to relive this experience of terror and helplessness everyday for entertainment?? Should we really be behind that?

Love the end credits, as they reset the park and you see the preparatory work behind each 'scene'. Interlaced with the black credits, it just gives you sufficient breathing room to shake your head, and the one thing that you probably CAN achieve resolution about is that you are very grateful you are not in Victoria's position.

#1- White Christmas (Christmas Special, between Seasons 2 and 3)

This is one of those episodes where the one sentence synopsis tells you absolutely nothing about what the episode really is about and how brilliant it is. This is the one-line synopsis:

In a mysterious and remote snowy outpost, Matt and Potter share an interesting Christmas meal together, swapping creepy tales of their earlier lives in the outside world.

The episode is a slow burn - the first two acts of the episode are pretty cool ideas on its own, though they seem entirely unrelated. The third act finally reveals what Joe's deal is, but the true reveal comes after that.

The dating coach concept isn't entirely novel or cool, but trust Black Mirror to make things go horribly wrong SO QUICKLY as Matt (played wonderfully by the talented Jon Hamm!) and his student completely misread the situation, and you're just on the edge of your seat going 'no no no' as you realise what's going to happen.

The second act is disturbing by itself - the concept is intriguing and doesn't seem very far-fetched given the current state of technology - creating digital copies to be your slaves. This should be easy to stomach, as after all, they are not human... right? Right?

Who am I kidding. I was extremely disturbed as Matt tortured the digital copy with boredom and solitary confinement, as this is a personal fear as well. I think I will break after one day in that room lol. Is this right, given it's only a digital copy? That's one of the questions the episode leaves us with, as we quickly move on to the next act, as we finally touch on Joe's sad story.

The idea of 'blocking' someone is pretty sad, given you have no way of defending or explaining yourself. We are left as helpless as Joe as he is blocked by his wife without any real explanation, and he visits them every year. The reveal comes gradually, and I guessed it as well with how the scene built up, with the camera only showing the back of his 'daughter' but not her face. (I actually guessed that she was actually black)

Then comes the grand finale, the coup de grace, the big reveal... how does everything that has happened so far fit together? Damn. The conclusion makes perfect sense, and everything that has happened before ties together perfectly.  The ending is also classic Black Mirror, leaving you feeling uneasy and with multiple questions in your mind:

Is it worth living as Matt, when he has been blocked from all social interactions? Does he deserve that punishment? Should Joe's digital copy be subject to the mindless torture for thousands of years? Should we be feeling sorry for him (it??)?

All in all, a fantastic episode, and in my books, a truly deserving #1 episode of Black Mirror.

Honeymoon trip to Germany and Czech!

I just went to Germany + Czech Republic for my honeymoon! We were gone for 11 days. Instead of recapping the entire trip... I thought I'll just recount 3 random points of the trip, and post the photos all on Facebook with captions.

Bavaria has a very weird tradition which led to a memorable experience

Bavaria is a state in Germany, in which the country's capital, Munich, resides.

This is Bavaria
During our trip to Berchtesgaden, a small town in Bavaria, we encountered a super weird tradition. There was some marching procession going on with some guys carrying loud bells, wearing scary looking demon costumes. We read briefly about some festival going on involving this, but didn't know the specifics.

When we were driving through the town, when the vehicle was stationary and we were observing this marching procession, one of the demons WALKED OVER AND OPENED OUR CAR DOOR. He went for my friend who was driving, and smeared his face with black stuff (charcoal? not sure what it was), before going off.

Needless to say we were mildly traumatized because now we know our car door cannot be locked when we are on the inside and if someone tried to rob us that way that could happen. But anyway.

The 'attackers' in the marching procession have some black stuff to smear on people's faces (we saw a few people with black marks on their face but didn't know what it was until the attack), or have a whip/belt that they smack people's legs with.

See above video for sample. The bells are very loud.

This is apparently supposed to scare off demons / evil spirits or whatnot. I think the smearing of the black stuff is unique to this town, because we went to another town and they didn't have the smearing of the black stuff (but still had the demons + whips)

I guess the experience was funny and memorable (because we didn't get smeared haha. our poor friend) but damn, it was scary when it first happened.

And after that, we were hyper vigilant when we heard those clanging bells again... always head in the opposite direction. And when we had to slow down as we passed them, all of us were holding our door handles.. just in case.. lol.

Food is good until it's not

Currywurst from Munich Central Station

I was expecting to enjoy the food in Germany - after all, I do love bratwurst sausages and pork knuckle!

Pork Knuckle from restaurant in Eichstatt, Germany

So I ate...

Pork sausages in a sandwich, @ Christmas Market in Eichstatt, Germany

And ate...

Meatloaf and bacon and sausage. A lot of pigs were harmed in the making of this dish

And ate...

Meat platter, containing pork shoulder, roast pork, and some duck

But after a while it was all the same! If I could summarise German food in 3 words, it would be 'pork, cheese, and bread (or potato)'. About 95% of German food is pork, cheese or bread. Plus it was generally quite salty as compared to Singapore's food. Thus, I was genuinely tired of German food at the end of my short 11-day trip.

When I returned to Singapore, I texted my mom to buy us some 炒饭 for dinner. She then asked 'want me to buy western food instead?' and I replied NO immediately. Give me my Asian food please!

The views were amazing

Many places had fantastic views without much effort (well, thanks to our friend Min Soe who drives). Some required quite abit of walking which I didn't really like... but sometimes it's worth it.

This was near the Willibaldsburg Castle in Eichstatt, Germany, with some upslope climbing for about 20-25 minutes, relatively simple road and not too steep.

Random view from some place near Lake Konigsee, Germany

This was about 15-20 minutes away from the above picture... yea pretty strange that this was snowcovered and the other areas weren't. Ok, I'm going to stop talking and end off this post with some of my favourite views

Could sit there and stare at the mountains forever. Ok I lied about not talking.

Clash Royale - Legendary Arena!!

I'm so happy!

I finally I did it!!! Legendary Arena!! The deck I used since 2700 is the deck in the pic. Discovered it after losing to a similar hog zap deck, really liked it and kept playing it. Originally used archers over minions, but lost to someone who used minions and realised its efficacy (e.g. To snipe cannon tower), thus swapped it in.

The funny thing is I wasn't consciously trying to climb to 3k, just playing for fun. And when I stumbled upon this deck, I started winning a lot and climbed to 2800+, my highest ever. Then I began to realise hey, I can probably do this.

The climb from 2900 was the most nerve-wrecking because it's so close yet so far, and almost every single opponent had higher level cards/towers. It was frustrating facing lv9/10 commons, and lv6-8! rares, and lv4-5 epics.

Kept my cool, focused on my strategy, and maintained a 66% win rate over the last 25 games, and a 75% win rate in the final 10 games. Final game was a mortar user, and when I realised I was gonna win (just had to cycle to fireball/zap again) I kept chanting 'don't screw up, don't screw up'. Whew!!

So happy... going to sit at 3k until at least tonight, then maybe play some games to get my chests.

---
Will go through the function of his unit in this deck, then briefly describe the overall strategy.

Cannon - Essential to pull Hog Rider which is an extremely common unit (probably most popular). I try not to put it down until the Hog appears, as the lifetime is pretty short. This means never overcommitting to a push, and having 3 elixir to drop this.
This is also quite important against giant/golem pushes, just to extend their pathing slightly. Pekka too, though if they don't reinforce with Wizard you can also pull Pekka with melee gobs.

Melee Goblins - They are almost always comboed with Hog Rider, unless you need them to defend against Pekka, Prince, Mini Pekka or some other emergency situation.

Minions - I'm favoring this a lot over Minion Horde due to its even elixir trade with Arrows, so opponents are more hesitant to Arrow it. It has 3 main uses:
- To defend certain strong ground pushes (e.g. Barbs, Valkryie, Mini Pekka, Pekka/Giant/Golem, etc). Remember that Minions have one of the highest DPS/cost ratios in the game
- To reinforce Hog Rider push when you don't have melee Goblins
- To snipe a structure that's placed centrally, so your Hog Rider has free reign later (This has won me several games). Cannons are easiest to snipe, Bomb Tower / Inferno Tower are more to poke down. Elixir Collector, if you get off a few hits definitely puts you up/even, especially if they Arrow your Minions.

Zap - 2 main purposes
- For a Hog Gob push, a well-timed Zap gives you 1-2 extra hits on the tower, sometimes even a lot more damage than you expect.
- Defensively, to stop Prince charges, one-shot Spear goblins, and most commonly, on Minion Hordes. One thing is Zap on an approaching Minion Horde will mean you take 0 tower damage, ONLY IF there's nothing else coming your way (e.g. Hog Rider). This is quite important when deciding between Fireball or Zap to deal with MH, both of which is a trade-up for you anyway.

Fireball - Useful for decks which run tricky combos like MH + Goblin Barrel, since you have Zap and Fireball. Otherwise, a great defensive and offensive spell (mass of Barbs approaching? Fireball!)
My favourite use for this is when the opponent drops something at the back, and I use it to hit that unit as well as his Crown Tower.
This is also essential against 3Musketeers, where you'll want to save Fireball +Zap for his 3M (3 elixir trade up!)

Mini Pekka - I love this so much though 50% of the time I'm almost throwing it away to gobs and wanted to switch in Valkyrie at some point. But it is super super useful to stop any Giant / Pekka / Golem / double Prince pushes, coupled with other stuff to support it.
And it has ridiculous single target DPS - if you can somehow sneak one to reach the opponent's tower, you can sit back and marvel at how fast it chunks down the tower. Even getting off one hit is good enough.
This is also useful to drop on top of Wizards/Musketeers when they are supporting some stronger push in front.

Ice Wizard - Not sure what you can substitute for this, as it is sooo strong defensively. One well-placed Ice Wiz can defend against a full HP MH (he loses only about 25% of his hp). Use him to trade up defensively, then respond with a Hog push on the same side. Ice Wiz - Mini Pekka sometimes work too - make sure Ice Wiz leads.
If you don't have this, you can consider Spear Goblins / Archers

Hog Rider - The centrepiece of this deck. I would say 90% of the damage you do comes from Hog Rider. The most common combo is Hog - Gob - Zap, though you may often not want to Zap depending on what happens. My rule of thumb is if they dropped a good counter (e.g. Cannon pull, Barbs), I don't Zap. If they drop a sub-par counter (e.g. Musketeer, Wizard / Ice Wizard, melee or spear goblins), I definitely Zap. I even Zap Minion Hordes - you'll be able to get off 1 (or even 2 sometimes) hit with the Hog, and the MH will be too low to touch your tower.

Other combos are Hog Minions Zap (same Zap rules), Hog Zap alone (if gobs are out of rotation and you know you are ahead in Elixir). This deck really revolves around how WELL you use your Hog Rider (timing to drop, where to drop, how you reinforce it), and it's a pretty high skill cap.

--

Playing against the common metas:

Mirror matchup (other Hog Zap/Freeze decks) - these are really a skill matchup. You basically need to Cannon up whenever he drops a Hog, and try to throw off his rotation so he doesn't have a Cannon for your Hog (or use the Hog Gob drop on the edge trick if you know how to avoid the central structure). One example is using Minions to snipe his Cannon. The key is to keep executing better Hog pushes than him, then finish off eventually with a final Hog push with Fireball or something.
You may also need to reinforce the cannon if he has Freeze, and if the Hog Rider is higher level than your cannon (e.g. Lv5/6 Hog is about equal with a Lv8 Cannon, safer to have one extra defence if it's a lv6 v lv8 cannon. Lv7 Hog kills a Lv8 cannon, you definitely need more)

Mortar decks - Never overcommit to a push. Be always content to chip damage off his tower bit by bit. Cannon in the middle draws mortar fire but not for long - you need to have something to damage / kill the Mortar. Adapt based on his defences to know what to take out the Mortar with. Using a Hog to clear it is fine, just be careful if he has Barbs. Against a Mortar user, it's perfectly perfectly ok to play for a draw. Never over-commit in pushing for a win.

Giant / Pekka / Golem - These decks are abit tricky. Against a Giant, pulling him to the middle with Cannon, dropping a Mini Pekka on the back to kill the support (or if you have another way to deal with the support, dropping Mini Pekka in front of Giant clears it fast too) defends well.
Pekka / Golem is slightly trickier. It's generally a good idea to send a Hog Gob down his opposite lane to make him commit Elixir there. Then when the Pekka / Golem reaches your bridge, drop a Cannon to lure, and deal with it as per normal (e.g. drop Mini Pekka/Minions/Ice Wiz on the reinforcing troops, use Zap/Fireball on them, etc). I find Golems a bit harder to defend, since you can't lure them like a Pekka, but I've won several Golem games with this deck so yea.

Double Prince - These are slightly tricky. You need to see which Prince leads. If Dark Prince leads, never ever drop Melee Gobs in front. Mini Pekka is fine. If Prince leads, Melee Gobs are best to absorb the charge. Always try to pull them to the middle with Cannon. If you have Elixir advantage, dropping an early Minions is good too, but do have enough to pull with Cannon / Gobs etc.
If you have Ice Wiz ready, try to keep it behind structures/other units. Using Zap to stop charge is also useful. Remember that your Cannon alone will NOT stop either Prince well.
In emergencies, It's generally ok to let a Dark Prince hit your tower, then drop melee Gobs behind him to finish him up.

Mother learns the smartphone (1)

I recently passed my mom my old Samsung Galaxy S4 phone to use, and it's the very first time she's using a smartphone. Her old phone was some Nokia-like small bar phone.

Being a 60+ year old woman with limited knowledge of technology, it can be extremely frustrating to teach her how to use the phone. I decided to pen down some of the conversations we have to vent abit.

--

Mom: "How do I record my singing? I want to hear if it's nice"
Me: "It's not nice, don't record"

---

Mom: "What's this paper clip thing?"
Me: "It's to attach photos. It's an ADVANCED TECHNIQUE that you should not worry about for now"

--

Mom: How do I read the (Whatsapp) chat??
Me: Just tap on the conversation you want to read
Mom: Tap where?
Me: Tap anywhere..
- she then taps on the bottom of the screen or at random blank spaces -
Me: Tap anywhere ON the conversation...

--

- She came to me while playing around with Whatsapp and asked-
Mom: How come my friends all suddenly talking to me?

I was a bit confused, because she just got Whatsapp and had 0 conversations. When I looked at her screen, I realised she was on the 'Contacts' tab, and the 'messages' she saw were just the status messages of her individual contacts...

The Wait

The sniper lay flat, next to the tall oak tree.
He was practically buried in shrubs.
His face adorned with thick camouflage paint.
If I told you he was there, you still may not spot him.

His back ached. His neck ached. He took a deep breath, and let his muscles relax.
He took a few more deep breaths.
He felt better. His eyes never left his arc of fire. He couldn't. He was trained to wait.

The wait was the worse part of a sniper's job.
From the recce, the setup, the concealment, the wait, the shot, the exit. The wait was the worst.
You never know when the target is coming.
And you only have a small window, sometimes as short as five seconds, to take the shot.

What was that?
A movement in the distance? A mirage? Just a wild animal?
The sniper leaned into his scope, his trigger finger instinctively slipping into position.
His breathing slowed.
His whole body slipped into a paradoxical state of relaxation but intense focus.
He waited. Seconds passed. Then minutes. There was no further movement.

The sniper had been waiting for hours now.
It felt more like days.
It would be better if something was happening, but it was quiet. It was desolate.
His thoughts floated to his family, to his friends. To his hobbies.
But he had to snap back to focus. Can't miss the opportunity now.

Sometimes bugs would crawl around. Sometimes big ones.
But he could not move. He could be spotted. Someone could be watching.
He waited. Together with the sound of the wind, the dance of the sun, the hum of the trees.
The wait was the worst.

He suddenly felt a strange feeling. His ears told him something that his eyes couldn't.
It was not what he heard, but what he stopped hearing.
The bird chirping in the distance had went silent.
His master eye went back behind the scope, and he prepared for a shot again.
His breath slowed tremendously, he braced the butt of the rifle and gripped the trigger.
'Come on', he thought, beads of perspiration trickling down the side of his face.
His crosshair trained on the edge of his arc of fire.
The target appeared.

My second visit to Orchard Health Clinic

Today I returned for my second consultation at Orchard Health Clinic. My initial consultation/review can be found here.

I experienced some soreness/pain again after my chest workout at the gym last week, so I shared that with my Osteopath, Lewis. He asked a series of questions again before beginning on my physical therapy.

Once again, he manipulated and twisted my joints in really scary ways. It really feels scary because of the angles he distorts and turns them while pressing down hard sometimes, but I never experienced any pain because of that! It doesn't seem possible and I felt like I should be squirming in pain all the way but he somehow was very skillful and I never felt any real pain.

He did some deep massages again, and helped cracked some joints (he's a very good neck cracker!! haha). I felt he focused abit more on my wrist today, really kneading and twisting and turning at all possible angles to stretch and feel out the entire joint. For some reason there was no pain while he did this, even though just before I entered the clinic I felt pain opening a toilet door.

Then he told me he wanted to apply some tape to me today, and asked me if it was ok. I realised later that this was because it cost $15 just for the tape :o

Looks kinda cool
After our 30 min session, as I was waiting for payment and discussing with the counter staff when my next visit should be, Martin (the founder of the clinic!) overheard our conversation and came over to give some of his own advice... which somehow turned into an impromptu consultation as well lol.

He did similar physical checks as Lewis - turned my wrist this way and that and pressed in similar ways. And reassuringly - he gave the same diagnoses as Lewis - that my left shoulder/traps were a little higher than normal, my rotation/flexibility of my left wrist wasn't as good as my left, etc. Reassuring because there's interrater reliability! So it should really be accurate haha. These osteopaths are really good at detecting asymmetry.

Anyway that session cost $120 + $15 = $135 :(( This is quite expensive.

Lewis recommended I stop pressing exercises entirely, and work on pulling exercises and see how my wrist takes it. Let's see if the pain goes away...

The Kiwi Who Flew

There was a Kiwi, he lived on a tree,
He sang and he chirped, but unhappy was he.
He longed to fly, soar over the skies,
But he was afraid, "I'll get hurt!" he cries.

A pigeon flew in, cooing and fussing,
'Come on little Kiwi, come chase your dream!'
But the Kiwi said "No, I am comfortable here,
Being lost out there, is what I fear!"

Next a crow swooped over, and shot him a glance,
'Just flap your wings, and you'll be airborne at once!'
But the Kiwi said "No, I don't have the strength,
My wings will fail, they don't have the length!"
Then came a sparrow, lightly flitting by,
'My wings are short too, you just have to try!'
The Kiwi said "Fine!" And jumped off with trust,
And into the sky, he was airborne at last!

But he didn't go far,
He dipped,
He dropped,
He crashed.

There was a Kiwi, he lived on a tree,
He sang and he chirped, happy was he.
'Aren't you hurt?' a concerned bird cried,
"Yes", he beamed. "But at least I tried!"

---

Be like the Kiwi - pursue your dreams. Don't be afraid of getting lost, don't be afraid of not being capable. You just have to try. I pursued my dream of working in the gaming industry, and while I've found that it's not suitable for me, at least I've tried. Have you?

The only unpaid review of Orchard Health Clinic on the Internet

I have been having wrist soreness/pain for some time due to my weights training, and I've been wanting to get it treated. I learnt about the osteopaths at Orchard Health Clinic through some (paid?) blog reviews so I decided to try it out.

I'm kinda writing this partially because for some reason there is no other unpaid review (I believe all of the reviews online (TSL, GP, BW - just run a search for 'Orchard Health Clinic Review') are paid reviews? They were all 'invited down'. I may be wrong).  This isn't really a review per se, but just a document of what happens in a session there.

Their small clinic is located at Park Mall, pretty convenient. My osteopath was Lewis, a big strong man about twice my size lol.

Background Check
The session started off with some background checking - I shared about my issue and Lewis followed up with further questions to get a comprehensive picture. He explained that even though some things may seem irrelevant (diabetes history), often it's possible that many things are interconnected.

Physical Examination
Then he began his physical check on me, playing w my wrist and arm and pressing down on the joints and rotating them in ways I never thought possible. At first I was abit scared that I would get hurt but after a while it was apparent that he was super skilled at what he was doing such that I didn't feel any pain at all! He just controlled my body movements easily by manipulating my hands / joints. I think he can be a jujitsu specialist outside hahah

He identified that my left side was slightly rotated forward, and my left lats were underdeveloped (compared to my right), and left traps were a little overdeveloped (compared to my right), a sign of some sort of overcompensation due to something. I never noticed it till he pointed it out!

My left chest and arm was a little tight as well. And one thing he always does is to ask me to check it out myself, which is kind of an assurance he's not talking nonsense la haha.

Treatment
So after the physical examination, he began a short session of 'treatment'. I don't know how to describe it accurately, but it's a combination of deep tissue massage + joint rotations and more pressing. A lot of it was uncomfortable but he told me it was normal, as he was helping me to stretch out those areas. And he's v strong so I felt abit like a rag doll in his hands.

But I think it was a combination of his confident and swift movements and presses, and he would continue to talk to me while he was doing all these, that helped me to relax and just let him do his thing and trust him. I hope all these really helps!

He ended off the session by telling me some stuff to do at home to further increase the mobility and flexibility of my joints, and arranged a follow up session in a week and a half.

--

I'll continue to document my time at OHC here, probably go for 1-2 more sessions until my wallet depletes lol. It's quite pricey, at $200 for an hour of consultation+treatment. But I must say Lewis seems extremely knowledgeable and skilled at what he does, and I felt safe and confident in his (strong) hands. Let's see if these treatments help with my wrist issue!
