First thing i see when the page loads after i typed in my blog's URL:

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

My banner was gone!!!

Looks like imageshack clears out its database every once in a while so that it gets big publicity from people who use images uploaded on them for banners. hmmph. i uploaded the banner on photobucket this time.

I had plans to work on a new banner some time ago, but .. never really got far with it.

anyway, had a shiok time of bball today. it rained like just before we started playing.. then we waited till it slowed to a light drizzle then we started playing again. Then we played a couple of matches.. no rain , some hints of sun.
then it started raining again -_- This time we couldn't be bothered we continued playing in the light rain.
All of us were soaked la! haha super fun. Then ball slippery and all alot of comical turnovers and alot alot of steals.
alwyn came to play again =) dominate sia he top scorer for like 2 games i think. I only made 2 nice alleyoops.. shots were all off today, majority of my points scored from landi and close shots.

rawr. Am gonna get my hands on a Ninja magic video tmr! =) Nono it's not some video which teach you how to do magic like a ninja. It teaches techniques on how to camouflage your sleights and stuff so that they cant be seen. =) It costs like 30 + bucks i think, but i'm borrowing from that Strat Club guy i was talking about in Magicjournal5. =) Cheers to him =)

okok.. time to go. Nag me to study thanks.

random stuff

hi!

what have i been up to eh. Well just had an econs test today which i studied quite a bit for. i daresay i memorized everything i needed to memorize and wrote everything out in the test. The problem is my evaluation.. cos in an econs essay you're supposed to evaluate well . i think my evaluation lousy :(

oh well.

I have been learning Lady Madonna! check out twin's youtube profile to see graham play it. grr. i shall learn it soon! I can play up to the chorus part then kinda lazy to continue, taking a break and trying to up the tempo of my playing the first part.

oh, and block test in 3 weeks or so :/ it's straight away from march holidays.. sucks. it's march study break not march hols. Oh well. time to shift into exam mode.

magic journal 5

Wow part 5 already.

Anyway at CCA yesterday, i performed Jazz Aces for someone.. i'm surprised how smoothly it went. I think it's one of the only tricks i can perform smoothly with some amount of confidence.. because the sleight is pretty simple. If i'm careless obviously will slip up.

THEN, the good news was i found another magician! Was a J2.. after i performed Jazz aces he came up to me and was like 'hey you used the ... ... right? '
Heh then i just smiled and nodded. Then talked to him abit about the things he did.. he basically did ACRs and showed me a few simple forces.

Right now i think i want to stop learning new tricks.. i just gotta work on my card handling and make everythign smoother. Everytime i perform my hands feel a little shaky and i cock up all the handling :S must get used to it! Must overcome stagefright! ROAR.
gonna practise smooth handling, DLs, patter, etcetc.

I shall be a solid magician!!! rawr!!

it's people like this who make you want to just stop playing guitar and.. admire other people playing guitar.

Tommy Emmanuel - DayTripper/Lady Madonna

He freaking tunes his guitar in the middle of his insane speed playing! Watch for it at 1:50 in the video!
CRAZY MAN! He's like on steroids. this is seriously imba.

MR FONG OUR MODEL

whee slack school day today. had CNY concert.. which was average.
First was project ANGBAO runway! haha basically each class is given 2 vanguard, 4 packs of hongbao, and scissors/scotchtape/etc. Supposed to dress up a model as nice as possbile.
Then our model was my form teacher mr fong! hahah. he's damn funny in the dorky sense hahaha.
some pictures of him and the costume:

hee.
other than that we had performances from various groups like band, Chinese Orc (screwed up damn badly the cymbals were super offbeat), dance, rhythmic gym (when they tried to throw the red ribbons they had to each other one didn't reach so only 3 girls had the red ribbon then the last girl tried to improvise ha.)
john and his dance group put up another dance again. but this time wasn't as spectacular as the previous one.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmWdY0NkZ9s)
this time like quite slack lidat :/ but still got one part nice. the locking parts la.

Oh and Cheerleading put up quite a zhai display except for one accident.. they lift one girl up super high then she fell down and landed flat on her face :/ ( i heard she broke her nose!) it happened in the middle of the routine.. and i'm quite amazed at how quickly they cleared her up and got back into the routine (got music to follow) quite seamlessly. Hope she's ok :/

Btw i didn't want to put another 'magic journal' because it's kinda short - but i have mastered some fanciful card shuffles and i came up with an entire original routine! =) It will blow you away i'm telling ya. Can't wait to perform it =)

happy valentine's day!

lol first thing in the morning as i walk around school i see girls carrying bags of presents, flowers, roses, balloons.

Then i hear 'happy valentine's day!' all around. All girls obviously.

Pretty weird considering that the past 10 years in boy's school, valentine's day is just like john put it: 'oh. valentines day ah. ok.'
No gift exchanging no balloons no roses nothing!

heh quite cool to see the spirit of Valentine's Day in the air, everyone running around giving each other hugs and the girls giving up little presents to their friends.

Yay i got some SMS wishes =) And also some verbal ones also. No present la, i'm low-profile one and my class girls all not onz one so dont have loh. Thanks to all those who wished me! =D

Ok i think it is very fitting now for me to repost this link for one of my favourite love songs of all time. =) haha. This is 'When God Made You', sung by Daniel Choo =) (my church friend)

Click here to download the song!

When God Made You

It’s always been a mystery to me
How two hearts can come together
And love can last forever
But now that I have found you, I believe
That a miracle has come
When God sends the perfect one
Now gone are all my questions about why
And I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life

Chorus:
I wonder what God was thinking
When He created you
I wonder if He knew everything I would need
Because He made all my dreams come true
When God made you
He must have been thinking about me

I promise that wherever you may go
Wherever life may lead you
With all my heart I’ll be there too
From this moment on I want you to know
I’ll let nothing come between us
And I will love the ones you love
Now gone are all my questions about why
And I have never been so sure of anything in my life

Chorus:
I wonder what God was thinking
When He created you
I wonder if He knew everything I would need
Because He made all my dreams come true
When God made you
He must have been thinking about me

Bridge:
He made the sun
He made the moon
To harmonize in perfect tune
One can’t move without the other
They just have to be together
And that is why I know it’s true
You’re for me and I’m for you
Cause my world just can’t be right
Without you in my life

Chorus:
I wonder what God was thinking
When He created you
I wonder if He knew everything I would need
Because He made all my dreams come true

Tag chorus:
He must have heard every prayer I’ve been praying (I 've been praying)
Yes He knew everything I would need
When God made you (I thank God he made you)
When dreams come true (you are my love my love)
When God made you He must have been thinking about me

this sucks

woo i gave blood today. ha. it seemed more painful than the previous time. the nurse anyhow poke the needle.

anyway, i volunteered to join the publicity committee thing in church. ha. dunno why also. and im supposed to help design and writeup the announcements and whatever for future church events. With serene helping.

HOW TO DO THAT WHEN MY DESIGNING SUCKS!?!?

omg i think my creative factor is like 0.05% (and cheryl is about 99%)

here's what i have after 30 minutes of playing around with effects.. i had no idea what i wanted anyway, i know it's ugly and crap, was just playing around as i said.
ignore the pink border i did it in frustration because after i was done i was like 'omgwtfbbqpwnzor this is so freaking ugly!' so i just anyhow draw over it. wanted to draw tictactoe or something over it. arghh.

ok you know what i'm so ashamed of it i'll just put a thumbnail. i dont even know why i'm putting it up. don't click.

Ok i can critique it myself.. no flow.. no theme.. (i was just randomly playing with effects) .. no color blending.. I think the only thing i like about it is the vector (yes the black shadow is vectored off a real picture) and the heart.

magic journal 3

Rawr.

Basically revealed 90% of my tricks on sunday when i was practising. People asked to see so i just showed them although i was not prepared.. oh well.

Anyway i'm damn proud of myself i figured out Reset by Paul Harris all by myself! no tips!

here's one of the best performances i could find on Youtube.. his card handling is so slick that i can't believe it. But by watching other lousier ones and comparing.. i figured out the trick behind this whole routine =)

Anyway here's one that's NOT performed by me, hopefully i can video one soon and show it =)

8-1230- free time A.K.A go use computer in the library.

=) haha. Due to teachers being on course and stuff, this is what i have for today. Have been in the library since 820.. just using computer and writing my essay (on the com! i love the fact that my new GP teacher allows us to type our essays out =)

Anyway woah yesterday's bball was quite shiok although i sprained my toe and my finger. Not severe sprains though, just.. slight sprains. Still hurt today. I love it when i'm just on fire and every shot seems to go in. =)
Wa but my lan-di (under the ring) finishing is still quite terrible. Should be 100% but for the first 2 hours+ was about 0% i think :/ Then i went to shooting then i chopchopchop. Then afterwards tired already so i start making runs inside.. then my finishing slightly better.

Played for like 4 hours i think. Went home and finished dinner... and went to sleep already cos i was so freaking tired. haaa. 8.45pm ok earliest i ever slept this year.

Oh anyway my school's Library Club has came up with this cool competition.. 'Oy i stumped the librarians'. Basically you can try to come up with a question that the librarians can't answer, no personal questions and questions must be credible and you must be able to provide a reliable source for your answer if they can't answer it.
So far i think there are less than 10 people who stumped them. Out of 100? Maybe only 5 or something. It's basically like you fill up this form with your name and contact, and write your question, then drop it into a box.
Then they have one day to answer it. Most of the answers are found via search engines.. they're quite pro search-engine users. Then some are just.. crazy librarian's handywork. E.g. 'Is a chair still a chair if a person does not know that it is a chair?'. Then some librarian who takes KI (Knowledge and Inquiry) was coincidentally writing an essay about it. So he posted his essay there.

Anyway, i stumped the librarians twice! (maybe thrice)

Well not that they completely couldn't answer my question, but their answers given were incomplete.
First was 'How do you use the Spiritbreaker bug in Dota Allstars v6.40', and in their answer (probably stolen dotaportal forums) they left out a crucial step.
Next was 'What aspects of the Bicycle deck are copyrighted?'
and i think they wikied it, and searched the websites and came up with an incomplete answer again. The full answer is on the BOX of Bicycle cards itself.. which i brought today to show them. =)

And my last question was 'Which piece of land is unclaimed by any country?'. I actually stole this from an issue of Reader's Digest.. and their answer given was 'no piece of and land is unclaimed blabla ' but the answer in the RD clearly states that there is. (some massive ice chunks in Antartica)
So i'm just waiting for the librarian guy to come and i'll see whether i'm right.

ok , toodles. back to my essay.

my ARMY registration ordeal

Heh i got my Registration Letter on 11th January and forgot all about it. Then today they sent me a 'Registration Reminder' Letter. Lucky they did sia otherwise i CONFIRM forget.. i totally forgot about it earlier on la.

So i went to the website www.ns.sg to apply..

Super alot alot of things to fill up.. they like want to know everything about you. Sheesh the govt should have some database or something. So troublesome.

Then then then at the 'deferment from NS' page came the problem. I selected to apply for deferment (which means postpone your NS to next year, etc (cos now schooling ma) ) ... then it brought me to this other page to submit another super long form (takes 30-40 minutes to fill up) (i took 2-3 hours cos i was doing other stuff also haha)

Then i went to ask around all my other guy friends.. and they all said after they applied for deferment then finish already. Said accepted and finish.

So i started to get worried how come my deferment not accepted.. then to fill up that long form, the last step is to book my medical checkup. So fast?! So panic panic. Spam SMS ask around.

Finally decided to call up their customer service hotline. The first 10 steps are just responding to the machine. Like 'For Pre-enlistees, press 1. ' , 'For A level students, pRess 2' etc etc.

Finally got put through to a female customer service personnel.. then after checking some stuff she told me to just go ahead with that long form, the 'system' will automatically know that i'm still studying so won't enlist me so early.

So i went ahead to submit that form and book my medical checkup date (MAY17th! remind me!).. then it said 'You have registered for NS on ##date##. You will be enlisted after you have been deemed fully fit for NS' (something like that)

This got me worried.. what if they enlist me like in July or something. Ha. So i called up the customer service AGAIN, this time was a guy. Then i asked him about it.. then he told wa smore helpful than the girl before, told me that 'JC2 students dont have to defer.. just book my checkup and go'. Then i asked him why my friends all can defer. Then he told me they will get a letter soon to ask them to choose a window perdiod for their medical checkup while i can pick a specific date at my own convenience. =)

So, i win. haha.

Yupyup. Army!! I can't wait. You get paid for training! So shiok man. Yea yea i know it's shiong and all .. but i think ill like it. YOU GET PAID HELLO. haha. But for now.. need to get past another hurdle.

card into box

Ok this trick is a trick i figured out after watching the guy perform it. Then i PM him about it but he refused to reply me.. so i post my own video of it.

The lighting is quite bad and video quality is bad too.. but the basic effect is i place a card on top of a closed box, wave, and the card is gone. I open the box then pull it out from inside. =)

He called it 'The Incompressible Card'.. totally senseless name.
It's just Card into Box. hah.

Magic Journal Part 2

Hey hey. Another entry in my magic journal.

Went to Kovan's Street Magic to try to buy Bicycles.. they were out of stock.. and the stupid store owner is FREAKING dao. I like stood there for 1 minute and he just kept talking to his friend don't care me. Damn unfriendly even when i talked ot him.

(Bicycle is a brand of poker cards that is very famous in the US, and widely used by card magicians)

Then went to Park Mall's Magic shop.. the shop is like tucked away in a corner in the basement. Haha nice sia the ambience. The entrance is damn small i missed it the first time i walked past it.

The owner is some old guy.. and they have Bicycles! Heh i just bought one. 6 bucks. Then i just stood around in the store for awhile looking around (it's actually really small, like.. 3 by 3 metres of standing room then the counter already. ) then the guy automatic pull out some tricks show me! So nice!
One was where i picked a card, he put it in and shuffled the deck, placed the card down.. then my card magically rise. haha. pretty cool if i didn't know how it was done but i learnt it before already :p
Another one was this Swiss analog watch he showed me.. he wave his hands over it the watch stop, wave again then start. =)

Last one is the coolest. He took out a deck of cards, he called it 'kids deck'. It's quite cute the back of the cards all random squiggles on white backing.. each card is different squiqqles. He spreaded the cards out.
Then he turned over some random cards, the cards were all like drawn by kids lidat. E.g. the 8 of diamonds is like 8 deformed red diamonds drawn with colourpencil haha. Quite cute.
Then i pick a card.. memorize it. Then give it back to him.
He does something i can't remember, like a wave or something, then he put that card facedown on the table. Then he fans through the deck in his hands.. and they all become normal cards! Like normal back and normal fronts. Then he asks me to check my card that i picked.. and it became normal also :S
Quite cool man. It's a trick deck of course, costs $35 la walao. haha.

Anyway since he was so friendly.. i wanted to strike a conversation with him but yknow me, super shy and all then i just stood there like a dummy while he showed me tricks every 2 minutes haha.
Then finally i mustered the courage and said something like "So.. do you get many customers here?"

Then we talked for awhile.. he says he gets regulars blabla. Then something like it's better if not too many ppl come cos some idiots may go reveal tricks.. bla. Then Lucky plaza that shop always very crowded. Can go there see tricks.

So friendly! MUCH better than the stupid kovan malay guy.

Anyway, Bicycle cards are SUPER smooth la. It's SO smooth that it becomes.. a bad thing. Slippery. The cards keep slipping when i put them together.. which is bad most of the time.
The up side is that i can do things like spreads and fans super easily.

Card trick wise - performed bizarre twist to Kel, amazed him i believe =) Bizarre Twist is more or less mastered, now just practising on my Bicycles.
Invisible Palm.. practising still.
Learnt some random tricks too via videos. Hope to be able to pull them off soon.

I want to try Indecent! The effect is simply i have a Ziplock bag.. and a deck of cards. you select a card.. can even sign it. Then i put the cards on top of the Ziplock bag.. then with a wave of my hands.. i reveal that the card appears INSIDE the ziplock bag =)
I know how to do it already but i haven't exactly done it before, due to laziness to find a ziplock bag. haha. must try soon =)

alright cya

i am a happy boy

omg so irritating my entire blog post vanished. type from scratch . zz

Anyway, went for BAY this week. Can't say i'm very satisfied on this, but i don't wanna say why , not here.

Captain's ball was fun =) Played fairly well.. and well my team didn't win but it was because.. i sprained chris' finger!! =( I swung my hand to block a ball then her hand was there then i heard a 'crack'. So stunned la. then i quickly went to check on her. Then pass pass then someone behind me scored.
:(

Up side was got to talk to her quite abit after that. happy =) mostly nag her haha.

Sunday was normal, i played drums for the adults! haha. well not adults. the mission sunday thing after service. Wasn't enough though. and my monitor wasn't on so i couldn't really hear anything. i think drummers go deaf after awhile.

in the afternoon.. BASKETBALL!! WOO

Asked pewi to come down , my pro SAJC basketball team starting Centre friend :) haha.
(About why i call him 'pewi' - ok first, his real name is alwyn. Then his CS nick in the past was pewi i think, then he use that as his dota nick also. Then me and another friend started calling him pewi. then because it's so nice to call i have called him pewi since then.) (try it!! say peeee-weeee!!! )

I played above average today =) Quite a pity he had to leave early because he has tuition. We made one very nice play where me and pewi passed passed passed passed to each other then score. shiok.

Church people must run more la. don't just stand there when your teammate qies. Sometimes they wanna pass also cannot pass.. so must move!! move move move.

Wa then quite shiok got one stretch i was quite hot i kept shooting in front of people some short some long distance shots.. all chop chop chop chop. (go through the net without touching the ring.)

Super satisfying man today's basketball =)

bleahz school again tmr. bleahz PE tmr -_- lousy teacher. zz. oh well.

For now, i am a happy boy.

SAJC - an honest assessment

ok i've been thinking about this for quite a while. When i mean for quite a while i really mean for quite a while. Like, about more than 8 months.

So, let's get it started eh. The first ever one and only 'Alan's honest assessment of SAJC'.
(this is going to be written in sort of a formal tone, since.. it's kinda serious. =) so if you're here for fun and games then just skip this post yea! ill be back with more interesting posts next time :P)
This is rather long, so grab a drink or something and sit back and enjoy =)

Link this to as many friends as you can! :)

Well firstly some brief introduction - i've been in St Andrew's since i started schooling (SAJS-1996-2001) (SASS- 2002-2005) (SAJC- 2006-2007) so i guess i am what they call a 'true blue Saint'. I've always been very supportive of SA - just ask any of my friends and acquaintances. When people ask me what school i'm from, i say 'S A' with pride. This same pride has led to a cloud being formed over my judgement and assessment of the school.

But just as a cloud, as long as a ray of light shines bright enough, it will shine through. Similarly, having thought about this for a long time, i decided to throw away all prejudice and bias towards SA and make this post. I just have to do it, as i'm not entirely happy with the way the school works anyway. I'll section the post as much as i can for easier readability.

Lecturers
Rating: 2/5
Sad to say, there aren't many good lecturers in SAJC. Now this is speaking from the perspective of a Science Faculty student who takes Physics/Chem/Math/Econs. I don't know about the other subjects - maybe the lecturers of those subjects are fantastic.

To be an effective lecturer, he/she needs to
1) Keep the students attention
2) Be clear in explanations and don't just read off the notes
These two are rather broad categories - point 1 can be expanded to humor, intonation, emotivespeaking, variety, usage of visual aids, etc. Point 2 may overlap with point 1. And i must say that these 2 are the basic fundamentals of a good lecturer. Noone is going to learn anything if the lecturer rattles in a monotone, reads off the notes only or is terrible at analogies.

In all my lectures, only 3 lecturers stood out to me - Miss Hon (Econs), Mr Manan (Physics)(HoD of Science)(no wonder) and Miss Sunarfa. These 3 have the ability to keep the students' attention with relevant and concise examples, as well as using appropriate visual aids and humour.

I'm being strict here - i refuse to classify those 'not bad' lecturers as 'good' lecturers as these two. Some noteworthy mentions are Mr Fong (my Physics tutor :P ), Mrs Tay(Math)(HoD). These teachers are clear in explanations, but each have some flaw that sometimes overrides their strengths. For example, Mr Fong although humorous and clear, tends to be too draggy sometimes (took 1 hour to explain accuracy and precision?!?), etc etc

Now this is really bad, only 3 out of probably 20 lecturers whose lectures i have attended whom i think are good. That's less than 20%!

It must be made clear though that 'lectures' and 'tutorials' are quite different. Some teachers may be bad at lectures but are excellent in tutorials. I must say i find Mrs Tay (Math) and Mr David Chong's (Chem) tutorial extremely helpful. Their in-class explanations are.. comprehensive and easy-to-understand.

(e.g. - mrs tay was on maternity leave for some time, and just came back this week. So for the first 4 weeks of school this other young lecturer was teaching Vectors. I understood close to nothing for all 4 weeks.. despite not sleeping in lecture and paying attention. Mrs Tay, after just 1 hour of tutorial, made HALF the chapter CLEAR. =) )

Time-table
Rating: 3/5
Another area which SAJC flops. I heard that timetabling was done with some computer program. Well, exactly because it was done with a COMPUTER program, it can't think like a human would.

Some simple examples: I have a friend who only has PE on Thursday in the morning, and the only other lesson is at 2.30pm, Chem lecture.
For me, i only have Maths in the morning of Thursday as well as the chem lecture.

Hello?! That's like 4 hours+ of wasted time?! Couldn't they rearrange it to put the chem lecture earlier? Well because of that, i think attendance for Chemistry Lectures on Thursday is about 60% - everyone skips it.

The weird long breaks all over the place also unnecessarily extends days - break after PE is 2.5 hours. -_-

Another always-skipped lecture is Friday H1 Lecture which is 1 hour after our last lesson. Who wants to stay around for 1 hour just to attend another hour of lecture?

The timetables need to be better adjusted. Maybe what they need is a human touch.

Study Environment
Rating : 4/5
I must say that there is quite a conducive environment for studying in SAJC. This is a matter of opinion, others may think likewise.

Let me give some examples - nice spacious library with many many study tables in it. The tables are big and wide too, adequate space to place several books or sets of notes. There is a peculiar smell though, think it's the airfreshener.
This was a phenomenon since some time last year - the school made some bulk order of wooden study tables and scattered them all over the college. From the 1st to 4th storey, there are more than sufficient wooden benches for you to do your work on.
A study corner located just above the cafeteria - plenty of tables. The only complain is that it may get noisy due to the noise coming from downstairs.

Food

Bleahz.
I can count the number of dishes which are nice in SAJC on one hand. In general, the food sucks!
The prata is like crap, it used to be run by this indian uncle who was fairly decent.. now it's 2 indian ladies who cant make prata for nuts. The prata they make all taste doughy and sometimes isn't well done.
The western food is sub-par, lucky there's a lady with an amiable, friendly smile to save it.
Wantonmee uncle is nice and friendly too, but he doesn't cut his noodles and they taste very floury. Not nice.
Cai Fan (vegetables/meat/rice) serves cold food , the rice is hard and the food isn't nice most of the time anyway.
Noodles stall- although this stall has its fair share of customers, i don't think the food is nice though. MeePok tastes weird most of the time, the horfun/meegoreng/charkwayteow etc taste too.. bland.

Of course, there is good food:
Chicken Rice stall always has long queues. Manned by a very recognizable big Ah-Beng-looking 20-something guy and his mom (and since this year, his good-looking girlfriend with gentle and pleasant features has been helping out too), the chicken rice is awesome.
The portions are big, you get more than enough chicken.
Now this can be a plus/minus point : the rice is slightly too oily. =) Some people love it, (such as me) though it's probably kinda unhealthy.
I love their chicken porridge =)

Malay stall - i haven't really tried their dishes (like Cai Fan) yet, but i think they're not bad seeing how people always buy them. Their Pattaya Rice is one of my favourites! Super delicious man =)

I don't really like the Principal. Ok let me rephrase that - i don't like the Principal. She is too stubborn, scolds her teachers in front of students (what kinda principal does that?!), close-minded... etc. I want Mrs Charles back. :/ (The ex-Principal of SAJC, now the SASS principal)

Any pretty girls? Handsome guys? Well better ask someone else, apparently my standard is rather low. But if you ask me, i would say yes, there are plenty of both.

Ok i'm actually pretty tired at this point, i shall end here. I think i have said most of what i have wanted to say for a long time.. so.. hope you enjoyed reading. Have a nice day and maybe see you in SAJC :p
